I have a 04' f-150 with around 53,000 miles, I am curious as to when I should change my plugs. I have noticed that I don't get as good of gas mileage as I used to especially on the freeway. I am aware of each plug having its own coil but how difficult is it to remove the coil in order to change the plugs and if I do decide to do it should I disconnect the battery first in order to prevent a possible spark in the wires. I would rather take it to a certified technician but I am sure that will be very expensive.
the 5.4 3V will need to be changed for sure...as what Fosters said...search on here and you will find the TSB detailing the process for this.
if you have a 4.6 then you can wait till around 100k as this is a regular style 2V head and will not be that big a deal to change IMO...just remember...one at a time and take your time doing it.
He has COPs, so it's more than likely the 5.4 3V.
Read up a little, get the TSB and follow it to the T.
I've got about 1,200 mile till I have to change mine, hopefully nothing goes wrong, but I know I'll break at least one.
I just had mine done at 65k at Omeara Ford in Denver, CO and it cost me $189.00 and they didn't break a single plug.
They kept it all day from 8am to 5pm so they could take their time and not break a plug. If they would have broke a plug it would have cost me $25 a plug for extraction...which is not bad considering what some people have had to pay.
