Tri-fold or roll-up tonneau

I recently purchased an F-150 supercrew Lariat. I'm very happy with the purchase; and in many ways, it is because of the info I received on this site. I want to buy a tonneau cover for it. I really like to retractables but they are a bit pricey. Anybody have any opinions on the roll-up vs the tri-fold covers? I'm considering the Lund and Truxedo products but am open to other names as well. Also, do you know if either of those can be partially opened?

I appreciate the help.

I have a Fold-A-Cover and I am very happy with it. It has 4 hinged sections. It will stack against the cab and you can drive with it open. To use the whole bed you remove 4 bolts and the cover comes off easily and folded up it fits in a coat closet (important if you don't have a garage).

there is a 3 fold design made of black powdercoated aluminum that can hold 500 lbs when flat. I can't remember the name, but it was about $700 and they say it can install/remove in minutes

I think it's called a Backflip. I'll research it later and post the real name if someone doesn't beat me to it. That's the one I'm going for. another plus is that it sits flush with the bed caps vice ontop of them like a tonneau cover does

BakFlip cover

okay there it is ^

It can only support 200lbs though...IMO, the hard covers are the way to go. the vinyl ones get loose over time and age with the sunlight. they also look cheap

and another cool product of theirs...it rolls up like a garage door. about $850 and it can hold 400# on top

Lund products aren't a good choice. They have some flaky design characteristics that are just not worth the hassle. Plus Lunds customer service is a joke. If you're lucky enough to talk with a person, you still wont get useful info. Leaving a message goes into a black hole.... I've owned a few and wont go back.

I'm running a Truxedo Low Pro QT on my 07. Great cover, was like 450 or so. But those new quick clamps don't always hold as well as I'd like. I end up needing to readjust the rear set of clamps about every month or so, because the cover slowly slips downward into the bed due to air pressure. Adjusting my clamps to make them tighter makes it so the don't close fully, they vibrate open and fall off shortly after adjusting.

Another thing about the Low Pro, I have to take the front rail off anytime I haul my Harley. The rail protrudes into the bed too far and would hit the front fender. At least it's very easy to remove, but just another hassle.

So, there are a couple negatives, that I've encountered. I will say, the cover opens/closes very easily/quickly. The cover allows very little water to get in the bed. 99% of what gets in is only when I'm washing the truck. And I remember people saying the cover material was too light which caused it to flap up and down while driving. Mine does not do this. The folks at Truxedo are very helpful if you have a problem.

Good luck finding a cover that meets your needs.

for the Screw, get the Advance folding hard cover, it's only 2 panels. I had mine for 3.5 years now, it's holding up just fine. It can be easily removed by yourself by undoing 2 bolts. I paid about $540 shipped for it back in May 2004.

I sell alot of tonneau covers, and tri-folds are selling better and better. svt2205 is kinda right, lund customer service is not the best, i deal with them alot sometimes its kinda painful. We do carry a company call Advantage aka Torza, they only make Tri-folds. They make a soft tri-fold and a hard plastic one. They even make one with Ford Racing imprinted on it. You should check these out before you make up your mind. PM or call me with any questions.

I have a 4 panel Advance Cover and love it. It's over 3 years old. The only issue I've had was a seal crack (about 1.5") when I opened it in cold weather and there was some snow on it.

It leaked a little, and I squirted some black RTV silicone in it. Leak is gone.

I'd highly recommend it. Similar to Fold-A-Cover, but the Fold-A-Cover has plastic hardware underneath (or did when I did my comparison), and the Advance has aluminum. The Fold A cover also had exposed eggcrate plastic underneath. Advance is covered.

I also movd the cover from my '05 SCab to the '07 SCrew when I traded it in.
