What are some easy ways to keep someone from stealing my 99 f-350 deisel? I'm thinking pulling some fuses or relays, just not sure which ones. Any other quick ideas? Yes it has an alarm, somewhat safe place, etc.. I am going to Ensenada and they are stealing Ford like crazy lately at the off road races.
Remove the relay/fuse for the ignition. Simply removing a spark plug wire might not be as effective as they could get another wire easily, but a relay/fuse... harder to come by perhaps.
Well, if I was parking my SD in a location that required that type of security, I would probably consider wiring in a kill switch. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something to cut the current from ignition to starter, or battery to ignition. The only hint I would suggest is DO NOT put it under or on the dash. I know it's easier there, but that's where EVERYONE puts kill switches. Be creative with your placement. A couple of my favorite locations are inboard side of the seat chassis, or in the ashtray!
Heh. I'm just saying... if someone told me "Don't go in there; you'll probably get shot if you do." then I would stay out of wherever it was. Same goes for warnings about my truck getting stolen if I park it somewhere.
Like mentioned above, put a kill switch. I have two kill switches in my truck + the alarm. If they are going to steal my truck, its going to take them more time than normal and hopefuly just give up on it. I go to Ensenada frequently and I park at valet parking or parking lots that charge you about $5.00 and its way better than parking on the street.
An easy to make kill switch is to get yourself a 2 prong plug similar to the power plugs you see on computers, or see if you can get some that look like the plugs in the wiring harness under your dash. Get the male and mating female plugs.
Cut the wire of your choice that is in a somewhat hidden but accessible location and put in the female plug. Make a wire loop with the male plug. When you run the truck leave the male and femal plugged in. When you want to disable the truck, just unplug the male and take it with you. The remaining female just looks like another loose plug. A pro would probably not have a problem but some one who doesn't know the wiring of your truck may be stopped, especially if you find two circuits to disable.
Recommended circuits would be the main ignition wire from under the dash, no cranking. Also the dual tank switch is a good one to disable, I discovered accidentally, crank crank but nothing. There are undoubtedly others under the dash and under the hood that will work. Not sure about a diesle and the dual tank thing. I think my switch controls the fuel pumps. Not sure if the diesels have electric fuel pumps and whether there are two and controlled by the switch.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
