I have been getting those notices in the mail about my factory warranty about to expire. I was wondering how many of you did get the extended warranty and how much does it cost/ and is it worth it to you??
i have an 05 Screw FX4 with 19000 mi.
I've been buying the extended warranty on our last few vehicles. I do this at the time of purchase, so the price is different than what you will have this late in the game.
I've had vehicles where I purchased the extended warranty and ended up never using it. But I've also had it on vehicles where I can only say, thank god I bought it.
How's your truck been so far? That might be a good indicator for you. How's your dealer for doing warranty work, do they make up excuses of why they wont cover this or that? If they do, go elsewhere, but if you stay there, you're at risk. Can you afford to pay full price for some of the large ticket repairs that may come down the pike? Remember most warranties don't cover wear items, so you're going to pay for ball joints, brakes, etc....
You can go on fords website and see how much it will cost. If your truck has been virtually problem free like the other poster said, I would take that money and put it in a CD. Don't go with a third party warranty, no matter what. They will deny deny deny your claims.
i just purchased an 04 screw lariat from the dealership I work at (Saturn Saab) and after reading all the posts here I immediately purchased a gmpp ext warranty (General Motors Protection Plan) for used vehicles even with low k's on the vehicle. The rear end problems alone kinda swayed me towards it. Berry 1234 is correct on the third party warrranties like Lubrico or Coast to Coast, they will find every reason in the book to deny claims ansd alot of dealers are starting to refuse repairing vehicles under the warranty because if they do approve it, getting payment from them is a huge hassel. (I've been a service advisor/mgr for 15 years and have dealt with every company out there.) My belief is that the peace of mind alone of having factory warranty on an aging vehicle is worth the price alone even though I'm in the position to have a tech work on my vehicle for fractions of what most people pay.
Another item I learned about. The requirements for a third party warranty claim are insane. If you read the fine print, they want records including receipts if you do it yourself for every oil change, tune up, etc. If you don't follow THEIR schedule on maintence, it gives them an out. If your car is used and you buy a third party warranty, for example, you have to change the tranny fluid every 12,000 miles, regardless of what your owners manual says, for the company to 'warranty' your car. Total bullcrap.
thanks for all the input. but i'm still torn between getting one and not getting one. My truck (knock on wood) has not had any problems and i have never had it in for any warranty work. All maintance has been done by the book. oil changes every 3000mi, even though i know they can go 5K. my factory warranty is up in April 08 so i'm just trying to get a start on adding on warranty
6yr/75K mi Ford ESP = $1100+-
6yr'100K mi Ford ESP = $1700+-
I got 25K on my 06' XLT 4x4 Screw 6.5-ft bed and tow at max ratings once a month for 100+- miles. I think the piece of mind I can run the truck into the ground and it is covered is worth the $$$.

Ann extended warranty is not a warranty at all. It is a very expensive (with very high sales commissions) mechanicall breakdown insurance. The odds of needing it is low and the odds that you will meet all the rine print obligations are smaller still. If you put the money aside that the "warranty" costs, the odds are that you will have a very substantial payment on your next vehicle.
CaptFX4,
If you want to get a extended warranty, goto your Ford dealership and purchase the Ford ESP warranty from them. It will be cheaper if you purchase the warranty before your factory warranty runs out. I purchased the Ford warranty for my FX4 as with the Ranger I traded for my F-150. The warranty I purchased for my Ranger covered more $$ in repairs than what I spent for the warranty itself and I still got $900 bucks back when for the remainder of the warranty after I traded the Ranger in. Don't bother with any of those offers you get in the mail, you will get screwed!! They just mail those "offers" to anyone with a car. I still get those offers for cars I don't even own anymore.

You are exactly right by saying that. Extended warranty is no more than insurance, but then again that can be said for the factory warranty as well. And yes the commisions are very high that the dealer receives, and yes you do need to make sure your vehicle is maintained properly......but, why shouldnt maintaining your vehicle be your responsibility? Any reputable dealer cannot refuse warranty on a maintained vehicle and any reputable dealer will NOT refuse warranty. This brings to light another issue, if you dont take your vehicle to the dealer for service work then they have every right to ask you for records. If you cant provide them, then your warranty goes out the window. Now, on the other hand, if it is maintained at the dealership, chances of getting any hassel whatsoever are slim because you have shown them loyalty, and that goes a very long way, trust me. And if you do, your at the wrong dealership. Not all dealers are bad, and not all are great but they still have to abide by the rules and parameters within the warranty contracts. I will always believe that factory (Ford) ext warranty is a great thing to have and if it is never used because your truck is "gem", the piece of mind alone is worth it.
One more thought for the day, servicing your vehicle at the dealer is really not that much more expensive than at a local shop. Mechanical repair on the other hand, can be but it is usualy done right the first time....please note, I said usually, everybody is human. lol
An extended warranty sucks when you pay for it, and never have to use it. But I have had two cars in which I am so glad I had purchased a extended warranty, because the repairs were three times the cost of the warranty. I am happy to report, that none of those two cars were Fords!
