I want to install a mbrp 4 inch exhaust on my 00 Excursion. How hard is it to install the down pipe on the truck. Is this install idiot proff install. I just need some confidence before I go and buy this. So if you have any experience in installing a exhaust on an Excursion diesel Please let me know,
Thanks,
Nick
Ya im thinking of doing the same thing, but I have an 04 with the 6.0L, I was told you have to bend the down pipe because of the tight fit against the firewall on the 6.0L but the 7.3L is probably different, I just hope I don't have trouble.
I wouldn't mind if any of you have a suggestion on the best exhaust for the 6.0L, brand, Cat or no-cat.
I did the MBRP 4" on my 00 Excursion by my self in the driveway without jack stands.
You have to use a sawzall to get the old exhaust out, but installing the new one is not too hard. It would be much easier to install the down pipe with a second person, but it can be done by yourself. It took a while to line everything up and get it so it wasn't touching anything.
It's about a 4 hour job by yourself if you have never done it before.
The instructions that come with it are decent, and in general, it's straight forward.
I just installed that exact model on my 00 Ex 7.3. Not saying it's hard, but it was a pain in the *** at times! Ended up cutting off parts of the old exhaust that were rusted on.
I had my Ex on a lift, which made it much easier. I guess you could do it w/o, but it'd be a lot harder. It's definitely a 2 man job, I had my brother in law helping who is a mechanic. the hardest part was not the down pipe, but we ended up having to take off this big plate (not sure of the tech name) and part of the tranny support, else there was no way get the downpipe and connecting pipe in the proper position. very little wiggle room too coming down from the turbo. i don't know how some guys get a 5 inch on there!
As far as assembly of the new exhaust, it's pretty straight forward. You will use the old rubber hangers, so don't destroy them when removing the old exhaust. I also recommend soaking the bolts with wd40 or break free for about 10 min before disassembly of old exhaust. and have a torch on hand just in case.
Connecting the downpipie to the turbo was somewhat difficult just b/c of the tight space. it's hard getting a rathcet in there and just takes time and patience.
To be honest, if it had not been for my brother in laws expertise and use of his shop with the lift, there's no way i'd try the install on my own. i recommend getting a few quotes from a shop and see what you're looking at. they have the tools and equipment to do it right and in a timely manner, plus they'd probably dispose of that old rusted exhaust too!
but in the end you will LOVE the new exhaust! Hope that helps. If you have any other questions let me know.
Umm ... I love doing stuff myself but I gave into the wife ( glad I did ) and paid a muffler shot $100 to put mine in. The poor guy played hell getting the DP out. Took him bout an hour and a half total with a lift and the right tools. I went and ate hot wings. Best $100 I spent in a long time. Just my experience.
OK. I went both ways on this. I took it to a muffler shop and paid them $20 to cut off the exhaust in front of the cross member and dispose it. Drove it home and removed the down pipe and installed the MBRP myself.
I put mine on by myself, the DP is a pain in the azz...would have been much easier with the help of a friend I probly spent 1 1/2 hours on the whole exhaust. I did put it up on ramps so I had an extra 8in or so under the truck.
I installed it in 1.5 hrs too but that is with the downpipe cut off before the cross member and without any ramps and by myself. Also adjusted the thing to the length I wanted.
I installed a Bully Dog 4 inch exhaust on my 7.3 f-250. Like everyone else here has said, the downpipe is a pain. I started by myself, worked on it for about an hour, then my buddy showed up and within about another 45 minutes we had everything done. I think if you have any ability working on trucks, you should be able to handle this. Just make sure you have a sawzall on standby, you're gonna need it.
