Hi I have an 86 Ford F 150 2wd ( soon to be 4x4 ) with a 302 fuel injected engine. It seems to have a tick to it not too too loud but it s noticeable and constant throughout the rpm range. It doesn't really get any louder or quieter just faster as it revs. I've been told its a stuck valve or burnt valve. Some people told me it could be a lifter also. But it runs fine and has lots of oil pressure. Any one have any other ideas of what it could be or how to make t go away?
Probably a lifter sticking. Put a can of Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase. May take a few hundred miles to quiet it down. Might be the fuel pump. Use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope to isolate the noise location, i.e., put the point of the screwdriver against the block, head, pump, etc. and press the handle end against your head just in front of your ear. You'll be suprised at what you can hear and how you can pinpoint noise sources. Especially useful for listening to and identifying alternator and waterpump bearing noises.
It could be that you have an exhaust leak. If the exhaust manifold gaskets are cracked, or the bolts have loosened on the manifold. Then you get that annoying little tick that never goes away.
I think one is called the EGR Vacuum Solenoid, and theres another one next to it that does something else
There by the battery behind the vacuum reservoir, there a 4 of them with power and vacuum lines going to them, It took me 4 years to figure out that was where it was coming from, it has something to do with the EGR. if you unplug the harness on each one temporarily you'll probably notice they will stop clicking. Mine was the EGR one, and the clicking was worse as I accelerated, once I put a new one on the clicking went away.
