I have a 2002 F150 Supercrew w/5.4L engine and the digital Air Control Panel.
When A/C is selected, air blows out panel vents for a few minutes, then changes to the defrost vents. When asked, A Ford Dealer Service Rep. said "Oh, this is a sign that your Control Head is dying." SO.... the Control head was replaced and it has the same problem. Still does it. When the truck has been shut off for a while, then is started again, the air will blow out the vents for a while, then goes back to the defrost vents in the top of the dash.
Anybody have any suggestions on the cause/fix for this?
This truck has the 5.4L engine with the Digital Control Head for the A/C system. When selected, the air blows out the panel vents for a while, then switches to the defrost vents in the top of the dash. When asked about it, a Service Mgr. at a Ford Dealership said "Oh, this is a sign that your digital control head is dying". So,... $600 and a new digital control head later, the system still does this. Starts on the panel vents, then after several minutes switches to the defrost vents all by itself. If the truck is shut off for a while, then restarted, the air will start from the panel vents, then after a while move back to the defrost vents.
Any ideas on what might be causing this and/or a fix for this problem????
the door that routes the air to the floor, panel and defrost is vacuum controlled. your digital system might be slightly different, but on the standard system, when you loose vacuum, the default is to blow air to the defrost (windshield). look under the hood on the right of center at the firewall. there area a couple of vacuum hoses that come from the motor to a TEE at the firewall and one hose goes thru the firewall, under the glovebox, to the controller you have had replaced... the other end of the TEE goes to a vacuum box inside the right fender behind the battery..... look for loose hoses. that is first, last is to change out the $600 controller.
