Front axle questions

List,

I am contemplating a truck purchase and have a couple of questions.

1. I read in the archives that some of the super-dutys (Prior to '02?) had Dana 50's in the front. I thought Dana 50's were similar to Dana 60's except that they were independent suspension instead of mono-beam. I have never seen a TTB in a super-duty. Can someone please show me the error in my ways.

2. Do the front Dana 60's in the super-duty F250 and F350's ride on ball joints or on king pins? Is there much of a difference between these Dana 60's and the ones found on the 92-96 trucks?

Thanks in advance,
BWSwede

There are two different versions of a "dana 50" the IFS Dana 50 and a mono beam dana 50. Just like with the other light duty axles, 44 IFS and mono.

All the axles currently use ball joints.

I don't know exactly what is different from the OBS to the superduty. Just from my casual observation, not much, but they aren't interchangeable either.

Nope, the last year for the TTB was 1997. The D50 is a cross between the D44 and the D60. The differential/hogshead is similar to the 44, while everything out by the tires are similar to the 60.

From '99-'01, the only trucks to get the D60 in the front were the Duallies. In 2002 they started putting D60's in the front of all SD's and even the Excursions.

These new axles use unit bearings at the wheels. A ****-poor design (and very, very expensive to replace). And like said earlier, they have balljoints.

Aldridgec and ATC,

Thanks for responding. It is much clearer to me now.
