heater problem

this is on a 1995 7.3... first off it takes forever for this engine to warm up.. is that normal? anyways its like have no warm air at all until the thermostat opens up... on the temp gauge where it says "normal" after about 10 minutes of driving it will reach up to about the L then all of a sudden I will get hot air and the temp will quickly go back down to about the O then warm air will slowly fade out until it gets back up to the L and the same thing will happen over and over. what am I missing here? thanks

You may have the wrong thermostat, you are low on coolant or your water pump is on the way out. The coolant is moving through the heater core all the time even if the thermostat is closed. If you do not know the condition of the coolant you should do a flush and fill with a new stat.

Here's a 203 stat:

The stat housings are prone to rusting and leaking after they have been disturbed. Here's a new one:

this may sound crazy... but what would happen if the thermostat was put in upside down..? I dunno just seems like a coolant flow issue
