I just read a thread on a Mercedes Benz website about someone improving their gas mileage by adding acetone to their fuel. He claims a decent mileage increase by adding 2oz. of 98% or better pure acetone to every 10 gallons of gas. he claims it helps the gasoline to atomize better. Has anyone here heard of this? At $3.00 plus for regular unleaded, it might be worth $5 or so to improve every 5 or 6 tankfulls. he does warn against adding too much, saying it will thin the gasoline too much and cause it to wash down the oil on the cylinder walls causing premature wear. 2oz per 10 Gal is enough but no more.
I don't think the acetone is helping the fuel atomize better by itself..
I think it's cleaning the fuel injectors of deposits and THAT's what's atomizing the fuel better.
Have to agree.......acetone is the active ingredient in nail polish remover. He's going to have clean injectors but if he does it ALL the time he's going to clean out stuff he don't want to.
I'll stick with SeaFoam.
guy have any of you seen mythbusters... show about busting myth... acetone doesnt work neither do alot of aftermarket products or anything like that.....the only thing that showed any real result was using used grease in a diesel car and worked just like that... best thing to do is the obvious... keep your foot off accelerator, air filter, working seals(trust me the seals on my pistons went bad on my ole truck and mileage fell to 6mpg).. but yeah i honestly dont think acetone would work
OK guys, here's what I have found out so far. I filled my truck and went on a trip to Salem down I-5. I carefully watched the speed and drove like I normally do. I normally get around 13.5 mpg with this truck. After adding the acetone prior to my trip, I got about 15.2. When I refilled in Salem, I put the same brand of gas in my truck for the trip back and did not add any acetone. I was very careful to put refill to the same amout I had before I left on my trip. When I got back I refilled again. 13.4 mpg. I don't know how this works. According to the guy that wrote the orginal thread, the mixture is 0.07% acetone. Not enough to harm any components such as pumps, injectors or pistons/cylinders. I'll experiment some more.
i think weve had this discusion numerous times...and the concensus has always been that the acetone doesnt help atomize or ignite the fuel, it mearly cleans the fuel system and injectors (exactly like fuel system cleaner would) so by running a proper mix of acetone through every now and then you can keep the most MPG simply by hvaing a clean fuel delivery system

You can't get an accurate comparison by going one way on each.
You would have to go round trip on each mix on days with similar weather conditions.

I used to work with acetone in the silk screen printing fields years ago-Its great for cleaning greasy engine parts, takes paint off of anything,- and its wicked flamable too, but, I'd really believe it would wash out the cylinder walls really, really quick.I'd try some 180,or 200 proof moon if your good at D'stillin- its free, and mixes well w/gasoline... otherwise,-wouldnt advise.
