Popped a 401 and 304 code.

Got a 97 F-150XLT, 4.6L, A/T, 2WD: It popped a 401 and a 304 code today, EGR insuff. flow and MissFire on #4. Is that the EGR valve or that DPFE? Sounds like a backfire through the exhaust on the left side. I just put Motorcraft plugs and wires in about two years ago. Just got the miss lastnight/today, not really worried about missifire I can work through that.
How about aftermarket EGR & DPFE valves, good idea or should I stick with FOMOCO parts? I'm taking the truck off the road and doing some things that I have been putting off for a LONG-TIME. Thanks.

Also, there is a black rubber (what use to be) hose form the rear of intake/engine to a green plastic valve/switch over by the master cylinder, why is it det. like crazy!? It rubs off like charcole, is this hose available from dealer? Is this part of the problem/cause of the 401 code?

yes, if the hose deteriorates, you get that code. replace the hose. also look at the EGR valve area, there are 2-3 smaller 1/4 inch vacuum lines, they will be soft and brittle also -- replace. about 10 inches long.
