Gears hard to find
I need some advice concerning my truck. 1988 f150, 4.9 L6, 5 speed manual trans. The transmission shifter seems loose. The gears are all there and working, but 3rd, 4th, and 5th are hard to find. I have not owned the truck long, so I have no history as to use/abuse, and I am getting better at finding the gears while driving. It also seems that going up in gears is easier than shifting down.
Is there an easy fix without replacing the transmission? Can the shifter be rebuilt? How would I check for problems?

There are two pins under the shifter in the transmission (on top of shifter housing). These may be worn, they are easy to replace. Don't forget to stake the new ones in place so they don't fall out. I think these are dealer items.
