well i finally finshed replacing my hpop gasket and turbo pedistal o-rings. now im looking to convert from my e4od to a 5 speed just not sure were i can get a conversion kit any help is greatly apriciated.
thanks, joe
No kit but you will need a donor truck with a manual tranny. Honestly I would build up your auto, you can have a BTS or some other good tranny for less than swaping to a manual.
Yep I agree with ForemanES. For the amount of money you will spend of the conversion you could buy a BTS E4OD and have a stronger tranny to handle lots of power. The 5 sp still doesn't like lots of power even with an upgraded clutch. Not to mention if your into going fast it will never happen with a handshaker. Even towing the BTS will outperform the 5sp.
I thought long and hard about this.and finally after doing some math decided that it would be better to buy a new truck with the 5sp than do a conversion, not that it would not be very cool to do if you had the time. so last week I bought a new truck, and am now selling auto. Nowof you are looking for a kit Check out high Impact.net I dont knowif the link will work but do a seach and you will find it good luck and keep us informed J http://www.high-impact.net/transmiss..._auto_to_stick
If you're looking to do the tranny soon, CALL them; they don't seem to respond to email. I not ready to get a new tranny, but I sent them an email in July asking for prices and info. I haven't heard from them yet.
well, if you drive the manny hard it will run with the auto, but we're talking dump clutch, and grabbin em fast (i only do this in my dads truck), and the manny will always out pull. i've had a manny 460, and e40d 460 at the same time, and now 2 powerstrokes, one manny, one auto. the auto won't outpull NEVER if you are a good manny driver. but, grabbin em is hard. for all work, go manual. for play, and work go with auto.
Always the same posted answers to this question from the same peaple, some of whom don't even have A BTS tranny and don't haul heavy loads. I went through 3 autos, the last of which I got all of the mods and heavy parts put in it (there was not another aftermarket or upgraded part that existed that was not in or on that tranny) and it still broke.
I did the swap. I like it a LOT more than the auto. Its not that hard, but you will need to go to the junk yard or find a donor truck. It was cheaper than a BTS auto with good converter. Do a search for my post about it. I am getting better fuel milage too. I will never buy another auto truck I don't care who's tranny is in it.
Sorry if that sounded rude... I don't want a flaming contest. I don't post much here so I am not as well known as other members. I love this board and this forum, I get tons of great info from it... THANKS for than. But I want other users to get all the info availible to them and let them make a desistion on their own.
Yep your right. I don't have a BTS or haul heavy loads. But I have heard of alot of zf-5 and clutch failures compared to 1 BTS failure with guys who do pull heavy loads, who do sled pulling, drag races, make more power than I could ever dream and so all sorts of other mischief.
I like the auto. I would love a BTS. work to do a manual swap is more than its worht in my book. But your correct that all the info is good to get. Thank you for posting you experience!
Hear hear! I agree totaly. I ve been pulling heavy loads int these trucks for years. I was pulling over 35K GCWR of hay this year in an f-550 6sp. any how I finaly got sick of having an autoin my own truck I finaly bought one with the 5sp..I love it!! now can choose when to shift based on whats coming up not what we just hit. any howIve p driven alot of fords on the ranch I work on .IDI's 460's PSD's, most with ,manuals. and belive me it is the way to go!
I went back and read my post again... the first part could have been worded a LOT better. I did not intend to insult or call anyone out. But I did, sorry about that it was uncalled for and it did not forward my message any.
You have personaly provided me with a ton of great info on this board. THANK YOU!
Let me just leave it with the message of... the swap is possible for those who want it, I did not find it that hard at all. It took the truck down for two days (Sat. & Sun). I love the way is tows my 12,500 boat now. Its like a different truck.
I have thought about this many of times just would not know where to even start. I have a 2 wheeldrive with a 5 speed and thats what i learned to drive and then bout an auto4 wheeldrive just couldnt pass this truck up tho. Have always wanted to put a stick in it!!!!!
wow now i really have to do some thinking. my first truck was stick and i really miss being able to choose when to shift and what gear id like to be in. my other question was if i do swap to a five speed to i have to change my transfer case and driveshafts or can i use the ones on the truck now?
