I just love inline sixes. They are simple, perfectly balanced, and they allow lots of room to work on them. Would love a SuperDuty, but no inline six, but SuperDutys are great, so if I've got to take a V engine, let it be two inline fives joined a the hip--V10 power--, but I still want a 300 six around the house.
INLINE SIX POWER! TRUCK POWER! Roll out the torque!
300 Cubic Inches of Low RPM Truck Torque! And twin-I-beams too!
"Drive a stick young man! There'll be time for automatics when you're old and unable."
I love my six because it's still a powerful truck, but I don't have to power 8 cylinders when gas is over $1.50 a gallon. Plus, I couldn't get the V8 with a stick shift.
I bought my truck with an inline for a couple reasons:
1) I rolled my old truck on a straight road (hehe, oops). 168' of skid mark then I rolled it in some dudes lawn. Sheesh.
2) I needed to get to work and my '89 was available with 45k miles on it for $2800.
3) I liked the inline from my old '81.
4) Its mo-bettah than the similar sized 8's out there, and I couldn't find one with a 460 or 534.
5) My prefered motor would be a 534 with a whipple and a turbo pushing about 30psi. Even if I had to run <8:1 compression and an alternative fuel (7.5:1 and propane would be perfect, as someone on this forum will soon find out) I should think 1500+ horsepower is possible. mmmMMmMMmMmmmmmm.
When I was looking for a "Trail Toy", one of the women that I work with told me her son-in-law was selling his Ford. So I started asking questions, but she had no freakin clue. So I called, and honestly....was a little dissapointed that it was a six. I've always loved V8's and really didnt want to have to worry about swapping out an engine. Needless to say, I bought the truck anyway. A few weeks later, I put a 3 inch body lift on it and some 33's and headed out for the trails the next day. All I have to say is that I will never change that engine out. I LOVE IT!!!!! It was unstoppable on the trails. It crawled over everything without any problems at all. I even pissed off a bunch of other guys when the found out I was running a six, and they had hopped up V8's!
At one point along the trail, there is a technial spot called "Hacketts rock" and its a little hairy. Well... everyone else had to attempt it at least 8 or 9 times before getting up it. A few vehicles even had to be towed up. I was the last one of the group to go, and frankly, I was nervous. I put the transfer case into 4 Low and started up the rock. (as a side note, it was snowing and wet) I guess the LOW range was too much as I started to spin the tires and didnt have enough momentum to get up the rock. I put it back into 4 high and walked right up the rock with no problem. That freakin 300 six had sooooo much torque, it wasnt even funny. I was pissed off too because my friends didnt get a picture of my going up because they thought I'd be there for a while. sorry this is such a long post, but it was such a great day. That was the day I became a FORD guy. And better yet, it was the day that I became a Inline 6 guy!!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jul-02 AT 00:52 AM (EST)]My parents bought the truck new, I got a good deal on it from them, that's why I have one. I am not as fond of it as some of you guys though, oh well.
Oh yeah, I like the idea of a 351w in an older fox body, but I would have to vote for a newer windsor, I would just like the roller cam is all.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jul-02 AT 11:26 PM (EST)]A true truck motor. Pulls like a truck should.
Slightly tweeked: 93 F-150 4x4 A4OD 3.73,
3" Flowmaster complete, K&N, Hypertech Chipped, MSD Blaster coil.
Got to say I LOVE MY TRUCK.
I drive an inline six because I can put a full pallet of 12X12 ceramic tile in the bed of my 94 F150 and it did not even notice it. The pallet had a little sticker on it that said the weight was 787.3Kg. Then I added seventeen more boxes of tile to top it off. The 4.10's out back probably helped a bit but the motor did all the work. Squatted the back of my truck about 5 inches in suspension and 2 in tire sidewall. Love this motor.
