is a 500 cfm Holley too uch for a stock 351w? I was going to do rebuild/upgrade to my engine, but life dictates. overnight I went from a full rebuild this weekend, to maybe a new carb to replace the old worn out motorcraft 2 brl. I have read that people recommend the 500 cfm. Just wondering it is stock is it worth the upgrade? will there be any noticible increase in anything, besides my trips to the gas station?
Carb is the front half of of a 4150/4160. just pay attention to what you do. Use a Holley kit and remember, like mama told ya....Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Gas milage is gonna take a hit. the Motorcraft carb is a good all around unit that can deliver decent mileage.
What kind of issues are you having with the carb??
after muliple rebuilds and countless adjustments, it just seems to keep running rich.besides the tubes that go to the choke leak real bad. so i was thinking of blocking off hte plate on the intake manifold and change over to a manual choke. I just can't seem to replace the tubes from the intake to the choke and not have them seal properly.
my stinkin camera broke. I did find a guy who has a stock intake and rebuilt carb for $50.00. I may go check that option. It is a whole heck of a lot cheaper than the Holley route I was looking at.
The Holley 500 cfm 2 bbl is half of a 750 Double pumper 4 bbl. I've used two of these on 4 different engines in the last 30 years. From a stock 302 in a 69 van to a 400M in a 77 F100. Worked great on everything I've used it on. Fuel mileage will depend on your right foot. Holley also makes a 350 cfm 2 bbl. List number is 7448.
I've got the 350 cfm Holley on a 351W and it "goes pretty good", as they say. But then I've never had it over 4500rpm. I have picked up a couple four barrel intakes and carbs over the years but haven't gotten around to swapping over.
how com I can't find any info on that stupid part. I believe it is called a thermal choke. It goes right into the threaded inlet underneath the piece you set your choke at(with the little black cover and 3 screws).
As far as the holley I have noticed that the 350cfm is more expensive than the 500cfm. I wonder why. I guess my main concern is if the 500 cfm will bogg my stock engine out, or cause any acceleration issues.
The 500 will not bog your engine. They first one I had went onto a 69 Ford van with a completely stock 302 and it was great as is. The cost difference is probably due to the fact that the 500 is a more popular carb and I believe the 350 has an electric choke where the 500 is manual. The 500 doesn't really need a choke anyway with it's 50 cc accellerator pump.
