ok so I have Heddman dual outlet headers, and I am just waiting for my last smog check this year, so I will no longer need to deal with it. I have been thinking of painting my headers, using a rust prevention/high heat primer and then many coats of yellow tractor paint (I think the ford blue and yellow go well together making the engine look sweet!!!) any suggestions on how to make the paint last and not just rust off?
No, I tried that. It just burned off. Tried header paint, same story. I guess ceramic is the only way. Do they make a brush on?
I thought that maybe the heat would cure it. I don't know.
I've used the silver stuff that Eastwood sells, did the first set 4 years ago and they still look good. BUT the shelf life of the can is like 6 months or something like that, and they ain't lying. I did a second set about a year later and the job only lasted a few months before coming off and turning to rust. You do have to apply it to freshly sandblasted metal, paint, install and run them up to temp to bake it on.
Well, you could try high heat BBQ paint, a friend of mine has it on his Mustang, and it's lasted 3 weeks of daily driving so far without burning off.

I'm also running the Hedman dual exits, the fit and finish is good, but don't plan on hooking up any emissions stuff, unless you are up to doing some custom work to the header. There are no provisions for any emissions junk, and the alternator/airpump bracket needs modification on v-belt equipped trucks(I cut mine in half and did a bit of clearancing with the 'ol angle grinder,) I don't know what it'd take on a serpentine equipped truck.

I figured I'g have to weld on some bosses for the emissions junk, but having to toy around with the belt bracketry doesn't sound fun at all...especially on my serpentine. The search continues!!! You'd think with all the 300 EFI's running around that SOMEONE other than Jipperds would offer a header for it.
Well, at the most, you may have to do a bit of clearincing on the back of a bracket, and I think cliffords header might require that too. I just removed the air pump part of my bracket because I wasn't going to run one. This is what I did:

I'm eventually going to take a pic of it beside a stock bracket.
The Headman headers are a very good piece, and they have equal legnth primarys, I don't know if Jippords are or not. Eddie was trying to sell a set of Jet-Hot coated Clifford Street Rod dual-outlet headers with all the emissions bungs etc.. Don't know if he still has them though.

LAST EDITED ON 20-Jun-01 AT 04:07 PM (EST)[p]Thanks for the pic Evan. From the looks of things, my alternator bracket is nearly identical to yours. Just makes me wonder how much fiddlin I'd have to do to keep my airpump to. It's times like this that remind me why I'm looking for an early Bronco.....no emissions BS to get in the way!!! LOL
BTW, just out of curiosity....are you running true duals off the headers, or did you have a Y-collector made?
I'm running the headers and that's it :-) I am going to eventually put true duals on it, it sounds great at idle with the 270H in there, but it is loud, I can be parked at the door to our garage, which is 50 feet away from the house, and if I give it a shot, I can see the windows in the house moving, and, if I watch them closley, I can see them vibrating when the truck is idleing.....

POR-15 (800-457-6715) makes heat resistant paints (three colors called POR-20 (looks silvery), Factory Manifold Grey, and Black Velvet). Catalog says for headers, manifolds, exhaust pipes, grills, boilers, etc. Ask them.

OK, Wake up TallPaul. Sorry folks. I had sorted the listings by name to find an old post and then went to the next thread looking top down as usual expecting recent posts.
is a header really worth it? i have a 93 and would like a little boost in power and have pondered the thought of heddmen headers and a flowmaster delta 50 series to go along with my so to be homemade "ram air" intake set up. how much was the header and does having A/C mean i need to make more mods to brackets n all? my truck is a daily driver so i dont want it loud, i also have a nice stereo inside. i just want a rumble.
Go to this site. This brings up an exhaust selection chart. Scroll down to the discussion and near the bottom they state that headers are most efficient above 4000 rpm and that so-called low rpm headers are not so great. If you are turning significantly above 4000 maybe headers would help you. Otherwise, maybe just fixing up the stock manifolds is better. I believe they hone them a bit larger and polish them inside, but not sure. However, I am not an expert and am only saying what I remember reading. You may want to search the exhaust forum on this topic and the forum for your specific engine. Then if you have more questions, make a fresh post which may bring in some of the FTE'rs who have put headers on their trucks. There also is something about whether you have mass air or speed density, the former being supposedly easier to work with. But I don't know all the details.
I've said it before, I'll say it again. When I put the hedman headers on my 90 I gained 7 mph in the quarter mile even though I lost 700 rpm on the top end due to a lean condition. The truck is otherwise stock. A properly designed header helps at all rpm, not just the top end. Headers are about more than flow numbers.
As far as the fit of the Hedmans on an EFI 300, all that is required is a notch to be cut in the bracket slightly larger than a golf ball. The clearance between the header and alternator is fairly tight, but I've had no problems in the 3 years I've had the headers on. There is a heat shield between the intake and stock exhaust that you can't use with the headers. I cut a piece of it out and put it between the header and alternator. Other than that and some manifold bolt issues, it fits at least as well as any other header I've installed, and I've installed lots of 'em on different types of vehicles.
