CAN is still OBD-II. The difference is CAN is a more sophisticated version. Are you sure their 2004 wasn't CAN? An OBD-II code reader will work if it understands CAN protocols, and even without it can still pull some codes.

Ive got an OBDII reader I got off the internet. Maybe I will check to see if its got any CAN updates. I havent pluged into my friends Explorer yet so I dont know if it will read anything. What year did they switch over to CAN? I know everything was required to be switched over by 2005 but some models got switched over sooner.

I know the 04 F-150 switched over cause they were redesigned. But Im not sure if the Explorers fall into that category. There are some upgrades for the deal I have so Im gonna give it a shot on thursday and see what happens. There are also some upgrades I can buy to read air bags and abs. Bonus! Cause Ive got a 96 Vic with the abs light on and it would be nice to see whats up with that!
