Tranny Temps?

There seems to be a broad spectrum on this site of what point, temperature wise, is getting too close to trouble as far as tranny temps. What is too high for the torqshift? Just wandering b/c my dads 06 d/max has the tranny temp gauge WITH ACTUAL NUMBERS NOT JUST C AND H and it goes up into the upper 200's before it has the red hashes. The most i have ever seen on the autometer is 195. Any input?

Here's some interesting info from Fire Service Super Duty's equipped with 4R100 transmissions used in New Jersey, it's dated December 2005: www.roscommonequipmentcenter.com/news_notes/nn15.pdf

I've usually heard and read that 220 degrees is the maximum fluid temperature before the fluid begins breaking down rapidly. Keeping the transmission fluid below 200 degrees is ideal.

Keeping the fluid below 220F is good. Real trouble doesn't happen until well over 250F. The 200F limit that many people talk about on the forums has no basis in fact, it's just a number that seems to have stuck.

The tech at my dealership said that it would be best to keep it under 230. Now how good is the tech, I don't know, but at this point in time I don't have any reason to doubt him.

I got it from 18+ years as an automatic trans engineer at Ford. I worked on the TorqShift for three of those years, 2001-2004.

Well I certainly value and appreciate your input and participation on FTE! You may want to consider including your experience in your signature so we all know of your experience when you're posting.

Any info you would be willing to share regarding the TorqShift would be welcome by most if not all on this forum.

Thank you,

Russ

Not sure I would admit to that after the snap ring\planetary debacle.

FWIW, my transmission guy told me the same, 220 is getting warm, 230 is getting too warm.

Maybe you can help with a question I have about the TS. Is there some sort of thermostat like the engine cooling system has? This past summer I was going through SD, ambient tmep was about 110*, I was towing a TT running about 75 MPH when my trans gauge (aftermarket) started climbing, went up to 220 before I dropped the cruise down a couple MPH. Cooled right down, never did it again. Seemed like a thermostat was stuck or something.

It wasn't my fault! I did the calibration. I wasn't responsible for any of the hardware, just the shifting.

There is a thermostat in the TorqShift. It works just like an engine thermostat with a wax pellet. It's located in the pump body, way down deep inside the trans.

Hmmmmm... Last winter I used a friend's heated garage to do some work. I put a Mag-Hytec tranny pan and diff covers on my truck, installed the temp probes in them and installed the Dieselsite tranny filter at the same time. I put the gages in after the weather warmed up this spring so I don't know what I'll see for temps in winter weather. The highest I've seen so far is 145*F while on a long highway trip last August. I have not yet towed with it. I'm sure part of seeing those low temps is the extra fluid and maybe some is from the added surface area of the lines and extra filter. It just seems like my numbers are quite a bit lower that stock. I have the DP gage on the filter so I can see if it's building up backpressure, but I think I'll change filters out at 30K intervals anyhow. That way it makes for an easy maint. schedule: tires rotated and balanced and front end aligned every 2500 miles; oil every 5K; coolant filter every 10K(every other oil change); fuel filters every 15K; tranny filter every 30K(every other fuel filter); air filter every 60K

Just an update here. It was in the mid 20's last night, up to mid 30's when I went out and started the truck up. I looked at the DP gage right after starting and it was in the middle of the green band. I have about 12K on this filter so far, build up is not an issue yet.
