i am looking for new ring and pinions for my 90 bronco 302 5spd w/33x12.5x15. I think im gonna go with the 4.10/4.11. I have 3.55's now, but it feels like there should be more torque than it has. But i dont know if i have a standard rotation or reverse rotation gear and what spline the pinion is, is there a way for me to find out without pulling the covers off? And when i get the gears in i was thinking about puttin in a spool. Reason being i was going to put it in with the 3.55 hoping it would help the torque. Should i buy it or should i wait and buy a locker/limited slip?
The 4.10/4.11 setup was a factory option for these trucks and if you plan on getting into larger tires the swap will be necessary. (Drove a 92 with 33's and 3.55's and she lost all her "umph"). Spools are tricky especially if you plan on running on pavement. Without the ability to run at different rpm's the tires will get chewed on corners much quicker than with an LS or selectable locker. Yes, these options are more expensive but so are new tires that must be replaced sooner from the wear. SO the question becomes; Do you want to buy an LS or selectable locker ONCE or tires for the rear many times over.
All in all, spooling or locking the diff. won't help to improve torque. They will only keep what torque there is, more firmly planted against the pavement. The gear swap will be the most beneficial in the torque dept.
Go to just about any sight, and look up your bronco and the gears you want, and they'll be D44 reverse cut gears for the front, and regular 8.8 gears for the rear.
You could get a drop in locker, that would improve traction, be low cost, and you wouldn't eat through tires.
4.10s would be a good combo for 33" tires, would you ever plan on going bigger? Also, do you drive the hwy a lot with it? If not, just in town, towing, and off road, you could consider 4.30 gears or possibly 4.56s if you want to go to 35s, but 4.10s would be a good all around choice.
You wouldn't need to know any spline count unless you were to buy a locker(I'd suggest looking into the aussie locker), and the Front TTB D44 has 30 spline axle shafts, and the rear 8.8 has 31 splines.
after thinking into it alittle more i really considering 4.56's. Im in the Marine corp and work aint but like 3-4 mi away. I have a 03 v6 f150 for distance driving. I cant find 4.30's in the reverse cut so i probably go with the 4.56. Later on ill put a powertrax or something similar to it. Im not a hardcore wheeler but i do like to play alittle. Im going to try and find someone to put them in for me that will guarantee their work.
There are several different companys that make ring and pinions for your D44(reverse cut), I believe Yukon is one of them. Really not hard to find, just not to common, so companys don't advertise them often.
Also, the aussie locker in just like the powertrax, but it only cost about $230, where as the powertrax cost about $450, and their cheaper version the lock right, cost around $280. I have the aussie in my front D44, and it is a very good quality locker. Glad I didn't get a lock right, and I wasn't spending that much for a powertrax (and a detriot is about the same price).
Forgot to mention that both my axles have Yukon gears in 'em. Eaton E-locker out back and Yukon's reproduction of the orgininal Trac-loc in the D44 up front.
if you have an LS 8.8 you have some option to stiffen up the rear by adding in more plates or different order plates etc. there was a long post on ranger station about it. I swapped out the discs on my truck and the kit was like $160 but you can use some of your old steels in there to shim it out. makes the re-install a bit difficult though.
i wouldnt put in a mini spool but a locker would be a better option like mentioned above. ive seen broncos with mini spools and cornering, parking, etc were horrible on the tires, also driving in the rain was interesting.
i know with 4.56's ill need a new carrier for the front what about the rear and where can iget one? Bronco Graveyard has the front 3.92/up listed for $55 but the rear doesnt say what ratios.
