I sort of a new guy and need help with my 97 f250.
1st) I am looking for a chip or programer what do you sugest.
2nd) at 25mph and 45mph the truck will slow down stay at that speed and then it will shift so hard it gives you whip-lash. The tac is reading about 2500 when this happens, at 2250 it is hard but not nearly as bad, at 1500 it is smoth. So what is going on and how do I fix it. In other words PLEASE HELP!!!
For the chip: Tony Wildman or DP Tuning. I'm a manual guy and try and stay away from autos, so I'm no help. TJ, Cuda and others do auto's and should be along shortly to help.

Check your trans fluid for burnt smell. Put a drop of it on your finger and inspect it under bright light for metalic shavings. While it probably won't fix your problem, It would'nt hurt to change the filter and fluid in it. Don't even think about a chip till you fix the shifting problem. ....
I changed the fluid abot 500 miles ago and it smelled fine, but the change did help for about 2 weeks, also there was a lot of metal on the magnet about 1/4-1/2 of an inch, I was tould some metal is normal, but that looked like way too much. If I cant get this fixed I am scared i may have to replace the trans.
There should be no metal in the filter or the pan. Usually you'll see clutch material before you'll see metal shavings. But if there is metal shavings in the trans then your trany is shot or soon to be a boat anchor. Best bet would be to drop the trans and rebuild it while the damage might be minimal but if you continue to drive it while its packed full of metal your damage rate might be two times what it would be at this point. so what im saying is, you could possibly pay significantilly less now then you could down the road when it actually pukes out. best of luck!!!!
Ok guys this is my world right here! I work in a transmission shop in college station Texas! The transmissions all 97's have are E40D 4R100's. The whip lash is exactly what problems i was having! Its probably rear clutches! Im guessing you have whip lash neck braking shifts in 1st and 2nd. If this is the case its time to pull it and have the internals rebuilt! The cost to me on my bitchin rebuild including, 2 six pinion steel planetaries, metal lathed 4 clutch drum to 5 clutch drum and had the complete internals rebuilt, shift kitted and what not was truly about a 2200 job but i got it for 1600 so thats what i would suggest you do ne way. If you go with just a small fix here and there like replacing the clutches and what not your still gonna have the same problems you have now just time bomb ticking. So i would recomend you get it done right the first time! I would suggest going to a manual tranny shop and asking about who is good for auto tranny shops because i know before i was workin for the shop i am working for now i went to aamco and they were gonna charge me 3000! So I would suggest you go with a shift kit-150 new torque converter /300-1000 depending on billet or not, clutches and all internals-? 5-600 in parts dunno depends on whats tore up or not! NOTE TO SELF YOU COULD POSSIBLY ALREADY HAVE A SHIFT KIT IN THERE BUT THE SYMPTOMS YOUR DESCRIBING COULDNT POSSIBLY BE NORMAL!!! I DONT THINK! But the guy who rebuilt my tranny has been workin on trannys for 27 years, thus he is damn good and i would recomend getting the Pressurizer box from Superior to raise the line pressure in the transmission pump to give you even better shift. But im steppin off my soap box now so let me knw if you have any questions.
I was with you up to the point of electronically raising the EPC. Mechaical way is much better (pump,vb). You can also over ride the the whole EPC system. While i have yet to try the total over ride of the EPC, i can see its benefits.

Your trans could be in limp. Thus the reason i ask to see if the OD lamp lights up when cancled. Limp will raise the EPC a cause harsh shifts.
yes your right about the EPC but for the price of the box which to me it was only like 80 bucks is great. but yes your correct actual mod is better but i like the box cuz i can turn it up and down and what not and plus its right there.]
1st off let me add that E40D in our trucks is pretty beastly to begin with. But it is easily turned into a monster. I would suggest getting two six pinion steel planetaries, have them if possible shave back(using a lathe) the vaccuum plate in your drums to make them possible to hold 5 clutches instead of four and of course shift kit which on mine required a little valve body work, but some people like to put different valve bodies in which is kinda expensive ummm but i would suggest the previous items other than valve body cuz the stock body can be modded by the right guy and be set to pull ne thing. THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS IMPORTANT IF YOUR PLANNIN ON MAKIN THIS TRUCK A SLED TRUCK!!! MUST HAVE BILLET $800-$1200 or just for a good torque converter 250 or so maybe cheaper! my Converter is by DACCO. I love my tranny so far, its a beast and im about to add my down pipe and 110 horse custom burnt chip from Diesel Innovations. Which i might add FASTEST POWERSTROKE. 11.12 @ 128.98
