cam install Q's
I have the 300 in my 85 F-150 torn down chasing the ongoing exhaust-under-the-valvecover problem. The guides checked out good during the valve job and rings appear to be in good shape. Current theory is the cam timing is off or a lifter has exploded. I'm taking the opportunity to swap the cam out with an aftermarket one. I got the Crane PowerMax 260 (see http://www.cranecams.com/master/apps/ford6.htm#2. PowerMax), which has slightly less duration than the popular Blue Racer with the same lift, from Jegs for $109.
My question is this. First instruction in my Chiltons is to remove the oil pan and pump. I noticed when I pulled the distributor that the drive shaft for the oil pump came with it. Is this normal? Can I pull the cam without dropping the oil pump now? I can't tell yet wether they share the same gasket or anything funky like that.
Any tips or tricks that people have run across would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time delving into this type of engine.
Best regards,
Justin 85 F-150 300/4 spd./4X4
