Anyone know how to ID a flywheel and tell if its the right one for a 460 77-79 era? I know there is a 180 & 184 tooth, does anyone know which one goes to which? how to tell besides counting all the teeth? Any help is appreciated!

1979 460 engines used two different A/T flexplates.
You need to know which block you have, so look for a casting number of either D1VE-6015-AB or D9TE-6015-AB.
The D1VE casting numbered engine uses: D1SZ-6375-A .. Flexplate
The D9TE casting numbered engine uses: D9TZ-6375-A .. Flexplate
Sorry, the parts catalog doesn't give the tooth count.

It doesnt have an A/T, the engine in it now did not come in the truck originally. It was put in after the 351 blew on the previous owner and he had the 460 put in. The starter teeth aren't connecting with the flywheel teeth and grinding and then just not even connecting making a horrible grinding noise.... trying to figure it out.
while we are asking and verifying, you do kno w 84 460 flywheel wont work on a pre 79 460?
he needs a 390 flywheel
I'm not sure I understand your last part of your response... are you asing if I know why the 84 460 flywheel wont wor on a pre 79 460? Maybe you should not ask me that, but ask the nice person who gave me some more info to try about getting the right flywheel.
You say I need a 390 flyhweel. Where is your back up info as to why I should pursue a 390 flywheel? what do you have information wise, for me to believe you any more so than any other guy?
pre 79 460s were internally balanced, so they use flywheel/flexplate that is neutral balance where as 79 and up were externally balanced, so they need a flywheel/ flexplate that has a weight in them to set them to the correct balance for the motor. but since flywheel for a pre 79 460 are few and far between, and 390 flywheels plentiful and are of neutral balance they work just as well. i have 360 flywheel on the 73 460 that i just put in my 78 bronco. the 360 will work too but it is for a 11" clutch where as the 390 is for the 12 "clutch
there was a place that made a flywheel brand new for the internal bal 460 i bought one. One thing I did notice that the ring gear is a little wider than the standard ring gear, because as i was told the crank sits in slightly differant distance from the block. If you haven't found one yet let me know and i will dig out my receipt and get the info for you
After 1862, I think was when ford changed the 390 12" clutch flywheels, Whiched to the 184 tooth 11.1/2" F/Wheels and changed the starters also. Today most flywheels our drilled for either the 360 0r 390 clutch setup... my 2 cents
