I'm against them, for the fact that someone might be having a life or death conversation. Granted those probably account for less than one half of one percent...
Hospitals now have cell safe rooms, where you are okay to use a cell phone, and it won't disrupt the medical equipment.
Cars? What about a passenger? Driver using hands free?
Now, if you're talking about a portable jammer that will jam someone who is annoying you nearby, then yeah, I'm all for it. The loud talking "big shot" in the diner with the "holier than thou" attitude, for instance.
There was a story in the local paper of some POS jamming cell phone calls of people on the same commuter train car as he was on. What is the difference between someone being on the phone talking with someone or two people side by side talking. Does it bother people when you can't hear both sides of a conversation?
Now, how many of you who are in favor of jamming someone else's right to use a cell phone are in favor of someone else deciding what kind of vehicle you drive? You are either in favor of a free country or you are not....which is it?
As a high school teacher, i wouldn't mind seeing one (or however many) installed in our school. 'Course, if we didn't have sucha gutless administration, cell phones wouldn't be an issue.
Sounds like a recipe for confrontations . If one would be willing to "jam" someones call, should that person not be willing simply to walk up to the offending party and remove the phone from their hand to terminate the call. I suspect they might be more comfortable accomplishing the act by hiding behind a faceless electronic gizmo. If I am annoyed by someone who, in an obvious breech of etiquette, is blabbering on the phone, I have no problem politely asking them to tone it down. Most of the time they do so.
I agree with Steve. Jammers are like a cop out. Why punish everyone within a certain range because of one person? If one person is bothering you to the point of you doing something drastic, than anti up the ***** to walk up to them and let them know. As far as talking and driving go, I see more people who just cant drive in general not talking on a cell phone, I also know people who can talk on a phone and drive just fine.
but those cell fone drivers though do drive me crazy. the severity of it may vary by region, but where i live they stand out like a sore thumb on the road. the real entertaining ones are the ones who drive a manual, talking on a cell fone and have their front end out of alignment.
I decided to start this thread after hearing this subject on the talk radio station I listen to.
Thought it would be interesting to read the responses.
Both sides of the debate/callers, on the radio talk show gave interesting/comical views.
Both sides agreed that cell phone etiquette is missing.
Some callers ''supposedly" carry these devices, and only use them when appropriate,
like movie theaters, restaurants, etc.
Others said it could be dangerous; i.e. emergency calls.
Even had one caller who said he'd asked if the party would please take the
call outside, or have the party call back later.
Then if nothing was done, he'd grabbed the cell phone, tell the person on the
other end "he'll/she'll call you back later", turn off the phone, and hand it back to the person.
I know there are times I wouldn't mind having a white noise generator to knock out a stereo while I am at the gas pump. But, they are illegal to use, it effects more then one person, and if it bothers me that much (if I don't have my kids with me) I am likely to politely ask them to tone it down a bit.
As for cell phone drivers, I like to know where the accident prone are so I can stay far behind them.
