Transmission troubleshooting
I have a 4 speed transmission from an 83 F 150 in my project truck. I am unable to shift it from gear to gear. The clutch is new and works fine.
I do not know where to start the investigation. Is there possibly something electronic that is preventing the shifting operation ?
There are wires ( R/BL and R) on the top that may need to be connected to a sensor or something along those lines.
The engine is an 89 5.0l that has been switched over to a carbed system, in other words, no computer. The truck is a 53 F 250.

Which transmission do you have? Where is the shift located? A common transmission from the time period was the single rail overdrive...a 3 speed with an OD gear. The shift for that transmission is located on a turret near the left rear of the unit. If your shifter is located there, it's very possible that a nylon bushing that the shifter rides on has broken/become dislodged and is jamming the shift rail. I've had the happen more than once. When you try to move the shifter it has almost a crunching feeling. The good news is that it's a cheap and easy fix.

even better news....if Bill's right.....it'd be easy to get to...just pull up the floor mat (ie carpet or rubber matting) and the tranny hump in the floor pan should unbolt...easy enough and good access.....Luck
