My 89 f-150 is not starting like it should. I have ruled out all the sensors so I think it has to be a fuel problem. It will crank over forever till it starts. Also, it jerks bad when I let of the gas and then hit it again at about 55-65 mph. It sometimes starts better when it is cooler out. I don't get it. Fuel pressure regulator? I have a new filter on it.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Aug-02 AT 00:17 AM (EST)]maybe its a bad fuel pump? might be to much sediment in the tank and over time it blocked it? maybe a line is blocked? check the fuel fuel pressure. being that it starts when its cold, it might be vapor locking? try wrapping the fuel lines with insulator. correct me if im wrong here, im only 17 and learning, and u guys are very good mechanicaly so im here learning all i can. hope im at least on the right track....sorry about running on ur post dont want to provide wrong info. always willing to learn.
Yeah, I need a way to check the fuel pressure without a gagauge (I am poor and also 17). If I push in the Schraeder valve, fuel should come out, right? even when it is turned off. It really does act like it is vapor locking.
Just to chime in, you guys are on the right track. Try this crank it a bunch of times, before it starts, pull a plug, look for gas on it, check the spark. The if it smells of gas and see its its wet, run down the spark route, check plugs wires, stator, ignition cap, coil.
If its dry be thinking high pressure fuel pump which can be tested as you described, but check your schrader immediately after turning the key on and off 2-3 times to build pressure. I'd run my codes too to see if anything is there. I'm impressed, only 17 and you're jumping in. Way to go. When I was 17, I just took things that weren't broken apart and then my dad had to figure it out to put it back together.
I FIXED IT!!!!!!!!!!. I was tinckering around and I decided to test my fuel pressure regulator to see if it would hold vacuum. I didn't have a vacuum guage so I used a syrenge (sp). I pulled a little vacuum on the line running to the manifold and it FILLED UP WITH FUEL!!!!!. $29 for a new one and it runs like a champ. Starts right up and gets great mileage. Thanks guys for all your help.
