looking to buy a new truck, new to me, around a 93 to 96, whats better 4.9 , 5.0 , 5.8 . daily driver, but will pull my airboat, no real weight just wind drag, thanks, for the help, Lee
I would go with the 4.9 or a 5.8 it also depends on the gears in your diffs and std or auto. I like 3.55s with a good 5 speed or E4OD they are good all around set up.
You'll find that most of the F-series engines seem to get in the 10-14 mpg range in an unloaded/unhitched truck depending on the gearting, even the 460. We've had many threads pass through here with people quoting all sorts of mpg figures and what it really comes down to is how hard you use the throttle.
For a given weight/wind resistance/gear ratio you can calculate out how much HP is necessary to accelerate. The 460 will produce this power at a lower RPM range than the other engines, the 302 requires a bit more revving but the displacement is smaller, and the 351W is a balance of the two actually - reasonable displacement and the power mostly down low.
The I300 doesn't make for a "quick" truck but it's by far the most reliable and it hums along essentially forever if you take care of it. It's a big bore six cylinder so it's fairly torquey. Just not quick off the line as compared to the other engines.
My F350 crewcab has a 351W, and I do believe it's the engine for those who drive unloaded a little more often than they tow. It's a reasonable balance.
