Rear end gear swap. What about the front end?

Hi Guys;

I searched around to make sure this hasen't been asked before without success. I am in the oricess of swapping up my rear end ratio from 3:55 to 3:80's to accomodate a lift and tires. This may seem like an odd question, but would I not need to up the Dana 44 ratio on the front end as well. If someone can shed some light on this I would appriciate it.

Thanks.

YES. You need to keep both ratios within 1% of each other, otherwise you'll tear up the drivetrain (probably the transfer case will go first).

The one exception to this is if you ONLY drive it on sloppy surfaces. I hear swamp racers run different ratios. Any contact with a high-traction surface when you have different ratios will start causing damage.

Awesome response. Thanks very much. It seemed like a no brainer but I had not seen any previous conversations on the subject.

Thanks again.
