i feel stupid asking yet another question... im looking into getting gauges... i like the look of the piller mount but i was told that their a much bigger pain to install... my friend said i should go with somthing like the quadzilla recon or commander (i think thats what its called)... but i rather have a needle style gauge...
once you get the piller mount and the gauges, how hard is it to run the wires and get the gauges hooked up and to light up when your headlights are on?
i already have trans temp and oil pressure on the factory dash... i want to get EGT, fuel pressure and boost... unless there is somthing more important than a boost gauge, but i definitly want EGT and fuel pressure...
so i guess my question is, would you go with needle style gauges or a digital?
I havent done the piller mount in my superduty yet. I want to. I am going to go with the 4 gauge pod. EGT, boost, trans temp, and fuel pressure.
I have the piller mount in my 88 F150 and I love it. On it I ran a wire to the dash and taped into a wire that goes into the dash lights. It should be the same on the superduty.
I just installed a Pyrometer single pod, it was very easy to install. I hooked the hot leads to the ignition fuse under the dash. The display light is on when the truck is running, I am afraid of splicing into the dash lights (there are a bunch to choose from). The Pyrometer just slides out from the pod, easy lamp replacement.
You don't say what your engine is in your profile, but assuming it is a diesel as this is the diesel forum, I have a couple of points. The trans temp and all the others for that matter are basically idiot gauges. The boost is calculated by the computer using other senders info (baro pres, MAF etc.). The EOP gauge is a joke. It is controlled with a sender switch that is all. Once pressure reaches about 5-7 psi it will trigger the gauge to go to half way and stay there till the pres goes back below that. It will only tell you that you have pressure, that is all it will ever do. The tranny and water gauges will go higher if warranted, but you need better gauges with actual readings, in my opinion.
Scafes is correct. The water temp, trans temp and oil pressure factory gauges are just analog idiot lights. I have aftermarket Water Temp, Oil Pressure, Trans Temp, Boost, EGT and Fuel Pressure.
For a stock or slightly modded 6.0, you should get a Water Temp, Trans Temp and EGT. Boost on the dash is actually accurate by my aftermarket gauge. Fuel Pressure is unnecessary on the 6.0L unless you've switched over to a Return Regulated Fuel System. Oil Pressure would be much more important as that is what drives the injectors.
I would have to disagree on the fuel and oil pressure gauges. If you start losing fuel pressure(clogged filters for instance) the truck will still run but the injecters will be starved and wear prematurely. If you lose oil pressure the truck will shut off. One more tip that no one told me, but I'll help you out--if you go with a four pod pillar, that fourth pod will not allow you to flip the sun visor down without unclipping it and swinging it out. PIA.

figure a full 8hrs plus to install all gauges, it took me about 9-10hrs to put my quad pillar in. the wiring is pretty straight forward, the egt is by far the longest to install of any of the gauges due to tapping the exhaust manifold. the boost gauge was the easiest.
I prefer analog gauges, digital is just not me. and the light wire you tap into the headlight switch. i believe it was the blue with light red tracer, but it is easy to identify by using a volt meter. i put in water temp, boost, trans temp, egt. than in the dash i have volt meter, next i will be getting oil pressure and fuel pressure......... i think i'm addicted to gauges,
I also have pillar mount gauges, Pyro, Trans Temp and Boost. Install is not hard . Just takes time. Bought my gauges from Dieselmannor and the great thing is they have the best install instructions that I have seen. You can look at them on their web site. Hope this helps. I plan to add 3 more gauges under the dash cuby hole; water temp, fuel pressure and oil pressure.
Gauges are a very simple install. The most common gauges we install are Pyrometer, Boost and Trans temp. The Boost gauge on the dash is very close with the analog gauges we have installed. If it were my truck(05 and up), Pyro and Trans would be the first two, then boost and if you wanted to get more involved, then oil and water. Let me know if I can help.

Good point on the oil and fuel pressure I hadn't really thought of. That does make sense now.
As for the Four Pod pillar, I have one and can put my sun visor down without unclipping it. I just have to grab it by the fold line on the left side and help it around the fourth pod, but it's no big deal for me.
