Ok, so here's the story. This weekend I went to a place called St. George Island with the biology department from FSU. The site they were going to was only accessible with a 4X4 truck, hence why I was along for the trip. I was quite proud of my truck, after all, it was the only truck out of three that didn't get stuck even once... the trail was pretty rough with deep, soft sand almost all the way out to the tip of the island, but my truck just plowed right through it.
Ok, so time to stop bragging and ask the question... While in 4X4 low, the front differential made a humming type noise that would get higher the faster you went. It sounded a lot like some cars do while going in reverse. I'm not sure if this is bad or not. As I said earlier I had no problem with the truck or the way it drove, just making sure I'm not killing something. I've not had the need to use 4X4 low much, and I don't remember it ever making that noise before. I just wanted to know if it is a normal sound, or if I need to look into it. I did replace both differential's fluids about 4 months ago or so, so it should be good in that respect. Thanks in advance for any info you guys can give me.
It could be caused by bad bearings or your backlash is in need of adjustment. Did yo replace the fluid yourself? If so, did you use the Ford anti-friction additive? I have heard of guys having this problem and this additive has helped out. Look in you owners manual and see what it says is required for diff fluids. It should tell you if your supposed to use the additive. I'm not a mechanic but these are just some things I have learned through my own experiences. You might want to call the service dept. at your local dealer or a reputable repair facility that specializes in differential work. Good luck with that. Hopefully someone who has more knowledge with this will chime in here.
