Since I was 11 years old in 1957, I think that I can comment.

Johnny's dad beats Johnny pretty much every day. Neighbors ( me ) know this, but nobody to complain to. Johnny grows up and beats his kids.
-- this is from personal experience--
Oh, BTW, I spanked my kids, when they were young. But, I really tried to never do it out of anger.

I agree with one language, but in 1957 a LEGAL Pedro might not have gotten into any good college.
--quote--
"Will a black man ever become President"
"Sure, if he's running against a Mexican"
( well known comedian of that era -- I forget the name)

Johnny brings gun to school. Parents have paid attention to Johnny and his friends, and he respects guns. 2007, What were Columbine parents thinking?
Also, not nearly as many drive bys in 57

Johnny CAN bring aspirin to school in Minnesota(07). His parents have to give the school a note from the doctor. This may be due to 1) fear of lawsuits, 2) Jane and her friends passing vodka around in class ( recent story) 3) some teachers want to teach, and not figure out if it's aspirin or dope.

Given a larger brain, I could go on.

I'm not saying that 2007 is better -- just that things are a bit more complicated than presented in that comparison. Also, it might not all be caused by liberals ( which I am NOT)

just my opinion ,

5os hell it was like that in the 80s. I carried a pocket knife with me to school every day until I got to high school (92). In 93 teacher with a pen knife key chain got a 2 week vacation for taking his keys out of his pocket and shaking-playing with them during a lecture. You could still have a gun in your car until 95, and take it to speech class to give a speech on how to clean it (with a teachers ok).

Last week a 2nd grade kid in my son's school got expelled for taking a "weapon" to school (a plastic part of his Holloween costume).

Last year when my wife brought a birthday cake for our son she got sent to the office and the police called because she brought a knife to cut the cake. It ended well but good grief. She was to get a knife from the kitchen and then she could carry it in to the classroom, or cut it before you come. Yea, the knifes at school are safer for some reason. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

The rules are not the same from when I grew up. Let that be a warning to all parents bringing their kids to school now days. Read that rule book, they made some big changes from when you read it on the buss on the way home from school when you were 10.
