back firing
i heard it was due to ur cat being bad. i heard many cars (rice burners) without cats and they back fire like crazy. my cousin removed his cat, runs straight pipe and a thrush pack so it would backfire...

back firing
Cars with headers usually backfire alot when you let off the gas. I always heard it was because the lack of back pressure from the exhaust allowed more gas to flow in the cylinder than what's needed, so it fires late and sometimes even has enough extra gas to blow flames out of the exhaust. Your hole in the muffler has decreased the back presure.
