Lol well it hasnt been working for a while but im finally getting a chance to work on my ole girl... but im looking in my haynes manual and lucky me i cant find anything on how to fix it... im assuming the cable went bad or something but im not sure any help would be appreciated...especially since my gas gauge and second tank both dont work so if i run ot i run out lol...(i use to keep track of miles)
Thats what I was wondering. I know the older trucks 87-91 have a cable controlled speedo. The problems with the older ones could be a bad speedo gear or a bad cable. The newer ones 92-96 have the electronic controlled speedo and with that your problem could be as simple as a bad fuse which would cause the speedo and the odometer to not work.
Beat my post. Ok since you have the older, cable controlled speedo/odo I would start at the guages. Check to make sure the speedo cable is still attached at the back of the guages. Follow the cable all the way to where it meets the transmission and make sure it isnt loose there. Then the worst cause (and most likely) would be a bad speedo gear in the tailshaft.
You could take the cable loose from the tranny & put a drill motor to it & see if the speedo works? If it does work with that, then I'd say it was the gear in the tailshaft, they aren't hard to change. AS far as the gas gauge check fuses & make sure gas tank has a good ground.
hmm im gonna try that and find it from the tranny first to check for the gear for the reason i sorta did something i shouldnt have... well long story short the **** for the light and the wipers broke and i managed to find some real nice ones in my garage that fit but wouldnt stay by itself so i umm well glued them....and if taking off the pane is like it was on my other truck i would have to take off that panel... but i'll check either later today or maybe tommorrow
