does anyone have any info on how to troubleshoot a fuel guage. I have a 1987 F-250 300 6cyl 4 speed with dual tanks(Utility Body). There is a front and back switch on the dash. IN the front position the tank reads empty, even when full. In the rear position the tank reads way full,(pinned needle) even when empty. All connections appear to be in order. Does anyone have any sugglestions to begin troubleshooting. thanks
Sounds like the front sender sunk and the rear sender is shorted, either in the wiring or sender itself.
Fuel Hi in-tank - low resistance.
Fuel low in-tank - high resistance.
My 87, owned it since new, had the gauges fix several times under the warranty/extended warranty, they replaced everything several times. The gauges, sending units, slosh anticipator and so on and every time they'd work for a few days to a few weeks and quit again. Might have got a few months at one time.
Got it back once and it had gauges marked "unleaded fuel only" showing on the dash in it, told em take them out and put the right ones in, it runs regular gas (at least way back then it did). They accused me of chiseling out the filler necks to put regular gas in it. Told em it came like that but didn't believe me so we went over to the parts counter and he asked about the exhaust pipes for it, the parts guy looked it up and then said "catalyst or non catalyst" lol Idiot! (The service manager)
Anyway the gauges to this day do not work even thought they are covered by the "life time service contract" They had going for a while back then, I could have them fixed for free.
Waste of time to bring it back in though, they can't get the gauges for it anymore and they'll just quite again even if they did fix em again. I guess I could let em put in the ones marked "Unleaded fuel only" now, not like regular can be bought anymore!
If you've owned it for all this time and they worked you must be lucky, if you just bought it Id just put a gas can with some gas in the back. That is what I do when I do drive it, which is not much anymore.
