My 84 bronco (300 I-6) has alot of backwash (oil) comming through the vent hose on the valve cover to the air filter. I end up changing the filter every 2 weeks when it is run every day. Can I use a non vent valve cover cap? Will that cause more harm than good? I have tried to use a vent filter but it gets soaked to quick. I know the engine needs rebuilt but I would like to fix or at least jerry rig the problem until its time to rebuild.
Have you had a look at your PCV valve? It might be screwed up from all the blow-by that you are getting. I personally don't have a lot of suggestions for a quick fix. Sorry.
This site has a good discussion on "Oil consumption and blowby problems." Scroll down to the blowby discussion as it talks about excess oil in the airbox:

When I click the link it takes me right there. Not sure why your computer dosen't. Do you at least get to Mark Salem's site? If so I just used his search and searched on "oil consumption" then scrolled down a listing of FAQs. I would copy the text to here but am not sure if that is allowed. Basically, Mark says excess blowby often results in oil in the air cleaner because it overwhelms the PCV valve. So blowby is either excess internal pressure due to bad rings/piston or something is wrong with the PVC system (hopefully the latter). To check the PVC system he say start at the vacuum port and check it isn't clogged with carbon, check the hose isn't collapsed, and check the PCV valve is not bad. (I have somewhere read that just because the valve rattles does not mean it is good). If it turns out to be due to piston or rings then try straignt 30 or 40 oil to slow the usage and blowby, but ultimately you would have to overhaul such an engine.
THANKS. I found it. As you sugusted I have been running 40W and 50W oil for a couple months now, same thing. I will check the valve again and hope that its the problem. If its the rings I will just have to carry more oil onboard until I can do a complete overhaul.
Well, if you determine it is the rings and are feeling experimental, you could try that Restore stuff. Actually, if the rings are just stuck in the groves from sticky deposits, something to clean it up and free them might help--Rislone?
So far I have changed the pcv valve and fresh 50w oil with the restore/stop leak stuff. Now I have a loud whining/whistling sound at 2000-2500RPM. It stops when I shift and hit the gas but once I start to maintain a speed at 2000-2500RPM it starts back up. To top it of I had so much blowby in a 20 mile trip I had a engine fire. Luckly I put it out before it got bad, nothing damaged but it looks like I will have to dump my 300 I-6. Thanks for the help.
Thanks for all the help. I have so much blowby, oil is flying out the valve cover cap and vent hose (both new) on to the exaust. Somehow its creating engine fires. I thought oil couldnt ignite just from it leaking on the exaust, only burn off creating a smoky ride. I have hade 6 engine fires all within a 5 mile trip. Its parked until I rebuilt it or replace it.
