Drieshaft balancer...cracked
I learned that my driveshaft balancer ring is cracked, and this is causing major vibration at speeds higher then 60mph. I'm afraid of the added stress it may cause the tranny, so I want to fix it. Is this a part that can be replaced or is a whole new driveshaft going to be needed? It looks like it should come off, but I just can't see how. Would I be league's ahead by just taking it to a driveshaft specialist to sidestep further damage?

I found one of these, rubber isolated, steel rings obviously out of alignment & cracked it attempting to push it-as a side light to rebuilding the U-joints! I'd figured it was definitely no good, the way it had been drifting crooked & was absolutely no good cracked & realizing it cracked easily-removed the ring by splitting, using a hammer & screwdriver as a wedge. Had to be better than having the ring fly apart at turnpike speed & seeing what happens! My only option was to try it/drive it, after I did the U-joints-which was such a major improvement & the driveshaft seemed very smooth running w/o the ring. Of course your results may vary. Shop that made driveshafts didn't think it needed any help, especially if I wasn't complaining of vibration.
Note that the rear tranny mount, especially one that's endured leaks, can be critical to smooth running & is often overlooked. Check for lose bolts after "major vibration".
