I found some filters (oil, fuel, and transmission) on ebay. They are called
"Premium Guard" have you ever heard of these? Should I stay away from these and stick with the more common brands? This "Premium Brand" filter is cheaper and dont know anything about them. I would like to know what you guys think?
I was searching for info on the Premium Guard filters and came upon this thread. I'm all for making sure I'm using quality filters for my truck, especially considering the cost and amount of work involved with changing out injectors. That said, does anyone have some empirical evidence as to why these filters aren't usable? I have pretty much always run the Racor filters, both in my 2002 7.3 and my 2003 6.0.
I haven't been able to find any actual information on these filters from folks who have actually used them.
Transmission, the toilet paper roll is probably fine, but a more known component is only $20 every 30k, or better yet you can have the shop do it when you get a heated flush anyways. Think about it, why try to save about 5% of what a tank of diesel costs, which you burn at least ten of every oil change, on a filter when it can cost you hundreds to thousands of dollars if that filter doesn't work correctly.
And the aftermarket lower HFCM filters do not have the "Aquabloc" filter media that blocks water. Racor holds the patent for it.
I have never used the aftermarket filters on my 6.0, so I can not speak from experience on how bad they are.....
I use Racor fuel filters with the Aquabloc in the marine environment....I see how much water they trap....and that's good enough reason for me to use them in my truck.
Like many things in life, you get what you pay for....

You have a 15,000 dollar motor, labor included, and you want to save a couple of bucks on filters? You bought the wrong vehicle. JMHO.
Yeah, I dragged this one out of the archives because I was searching for it. I knew it was an old thread, but hey, stirring the pot is fun sometimes.
My first thought about these filters was they didn't have the membrane as well, but they do. At least in the pictures of the filters I've seen.
I'm very picky about maintaining my truck, and I'm going to stick with the Racor filters. I was just curious if anyone had experience with these and if there was anything concrete about why these are inferior filters. I mean, why would you pay triple for a filter if you can get an equivalent product for 1/3 the price.
Maybe I'll order one and give it a go for a few weeks just to try it and then tear it apart and see what it looks like compared to a Racor that's due to be changed.
So, patents don't run out for 20 years. So to make an off brand filter for our trucks, that manufacturer has to make them different than OEM, or face a lawsuit.
The filter part can meet certain specs, but the shape and size of the filter are different in some manner. Something has to be different.
Some are short and need a filler in the OEM filter cap. Some are taller and need a totally different cap. Some even have a ball check valve in the top of the filter, (I have one of those in my box I bought just to see what it looks like, it was "inexpensive" too! )
So, with that, I choose not to use these filters. I use Racor or Motorcraft.
I actually have one of those filters at the shop. It got sent to me by someone. Can't remember tho. But I use it as a customer visual aid on the differences. I'm talking about an oil filter btw. And I'm not ever planning on using it
On another forum, a representative from a filter company stated that their 6.0L filter (fuel IIRC) was made (and stamped accordingly) by Racor, but with their own proprietary filter media. So many possible twists and turns on making it look like the real thing and getting around patents, changing things that are difficult to identify as aftermarket. Stick w/ the real thing IMO.
