i have searched and read a lot of posts about the problems with the post 2003 6L diesel - want an X with a diesel and trying to decide between a 7.3L (most of which are burdened with high miles) or a newer 6L - is there a point after which Ford worked out the kinks? - it doesn't seem so...but what are your thoughts? - thanks ed!!
if ur going to get a 6.0, go for the 04 or 05. U can get a 03, as long as u check for a oasis report and find that very little warrenty was worked on the truck, as this will tell u that it isnt a problematic 6.0. Other then that, id rather have a 7.3 no matter how many miles are on it, just as long as it was well taken care of
My wifes 00 X has 181K miles and still runs like a top. Did a search yesterday on 00 X's and found most have 130-230K miles. Found one with under 50K miles and they wanted $25K+ for it. One that looked like a deal was a 96K mile 00 X 4x4 white with tan 4in lift with four tv's, $13,500 add said divorce forces sale, saw it on autrader.com.
The strongest motor ever placed in an Excursion is the 2000 7.3, forged rod motor. If your running stock the later 7.3's are fine but nothing compares to factory installed forged rods.
You should be able to see 300K+ miles on most taken care of 7.3's. With the 6.0 who knows, Ford is now offering a 200K mile warranty on the 6.0's this could be a good idea, bet it's spendy though.
An all blacked out 05 6.0 wouldn't be too bad!
A friend of mine had a 05 F350 DRW he bought new and did good mainance on it. At 35K miles the motor was fried. Another friend bought a used 04 F350 and by 76K miles it was on it's third 6.0. Another friend has a 16K mile 04 6.0 F350 and it's been leaking oil for a while. Then you'll see one with 150K trouble free miles.
The 6.0 appears to be a real hit-or-miss engine. The 7.3s are pretty much trouble-free so long as you keep them stock and maintain them well. As is the case with all diesels I have found, if you work them hard they will last longer and give you fewer problems. The only 7.3s I have seen have problems are the ones that get short trips and almost never tow anything.
That said, the 6.0 hsa good power and is sure quiet when you get one that runs well. The 7.3 is a terribly noisy engine.
Unless you actually tow a lot or put mor ethan 20,000 miles/year on your truck, I would suggest getting the V10. They can be had much, much cheaper than the diesels, the maintenance costs are much lower, and they'll tend to be more reliable when not used under very heavy service.
Well I guess this is a great question for me to answer because I got both. I have a 00 Excurson with the 7.3L and a 04 excursion with the 6.0
I will start with the 00 X I has been so far an ausome truck It has 131,000 miles on it. We used to tow a 7,000 Travel Trailer with it and it did that with no problem. The 04 X is also a great Truck it tows our 13,000 toy hauler fine even thought it over weight. THe 04 has only been in the shop of a EGR lalve replacment at 40,000 miles. Right now it has 45,000 on it. If you want more power out of the box the 6.0 is for you. But if you want a more reliabal truck the 7.3 then. If you go for the 6.0 make sure you get one after 04 then 03 are hit and misses. I am in the process of making the 7.3 a fast truck right now so there are choices to make the 7.3 faster than stock but it takes some money.
I hope this helps you out and if you have any more question just hollar,
Nick
P.S welcome to FTE
6.0: I think I am reading that the this engine indeed has had problems - particularly in 2003 when it first came out - having said that, on paper and perhaps in person, it is a faster (more efficient?) engine that the 7.3L (which costs $ to get to the same level of performance) - one is advised to get an "Oasis" report (like Carfax??) to see if there has been warranty work as an indicator of whether you have a hit or a miss engine - and that it is just that ...hit or miss - when they're on...their great...if they're off...nightmare
7.3: 2000 was the best factory built year - but all 7.3s are super reliable, dependable...sort of labrador retreivers of the engines...not a sprinter...not the best tricks, but good and reliable...like an old friend - that said, not only is it slow in stock form (assume this refers to acceleration), but it is "terribly noisy"
V10: interesting point from FordCrusher - diesels need to be worked and driven...consider a V10 for lighter duty...other's thoughts on this?
The only reason older 7.3s would be better is for the rods. If you dont intend to do major mods (going over 500hp) they should all hold up fine. The 7.3 is suprisingly quick when you throw a tuner on it.

Do I have this right??? - thanks!! - ed
I didn't get that a V10 should be for 'lighter duty'?
Let me ask...what do you intend to do with the truck/motor once you get it?
I'll further add that ANYTHING a STOCK 7.3L could tug...a 4.30 V10 could tug JUST AS GOOD...so 'light duty'?...I disagree with that take...
Now the reason folks like the forged rods is for 'modding' purposes...start up'ing the HP/Trq or injecting some propane into the mix...well the non-forged rods simply can't handle the extra power...
But STOCK to STOCK power wise when properly geared...EITHER the 7.3L or 6.8L would be an equal choice IMO...
You should get what will make you happy...afterall YOU have to drive it...I made my choice with the 6.8L and couldn't be happier with the power she has to give tugging my 9000# TT where EVER I take her.

I have a 04 blacked out 6.0L and it runs great, was draining coolant so took it in, later found out it had a blown head gasket, if you blow the head gasket on a 6.0L all you do is install a stud kit which runs around $600 and it never happens again. luckily my engine was covered under warranty but only by 100 miles, trust me ford is trippin about it.
We have a 00 7.3L F-350 and I personally like the power and response of the 6.0L over the 7.3L stock, plus that whistle of the 6.0L is awesome.
