Planetaryg gears
On modern overdrive automatics is overdrive part of the gear combinations of the planetary gears or is it another componet entirely? I have found that for the 3 speed autos there are different combinations aviable just by changine the planetary gears. The planetary gears move to make different combinations so why can't a C6 have 4 speeds like the 4R100?

Not just another set of clutches, you also need another planetary set. There is an overdrive planetary set in the front of the E4OD/4R100. This set shifts from 1:1 to 0.71:1 to shift from 3rd gear to overdrive.
