Hi all, well, I had to replace my starter for the first time in my '96 250 XLT 5.8 4x4 auto. With 220K on it it owed me nothing. However, when taking the bolts out, the top bolt snapped and theres about 1/2 inch remaining. I don't have a torch-my question is this...if I install the new starter with just the bottom bolt, would that be safe to drive it the distance (40 miles) to my friends shop to work on it? Oh, and any secrets to getting that bolt stud out? I certainly don't want to snap it flush...thanks in advance!
Jay
It would be safe to drive to get it to the shop with one bolt but you may break the ear off the starter side with the good bolt as it torques. I would say weld a nut to the end of whats left of the bolt and grab it out while its good and hot.
Don't start it with one bolt you could tear up the flywheel. Bring the torch to it.
That 1/2" ya got sticking out is plenty to grab with vice grips. Heat the block around the bolt, not the bolt itself.
Take your time, have the vice grips adjusted before you start heating it, it will come out just fine.
Thanx for all the suggestions guys-I took care of it this A.M. I took a little of everyone's advice..soaked the bolt w/PB Blaster, applied heat from a plumbers torch to both the bolt stud and surrounding area, took the vise grips to it and finally got it to move. After that I applied more PB, more heat and out it came like a bad tooth! Thanks to all who posted!

Glad you got it out..........Lucky You.
One thing I have learned, (picked it up here), especially on starter bolts, that it is a good practice to take a big punch or a 3/8's ratchet extention and hit the head of the bolts a few times before trying to loosen them. It unlocks the backward pressure on the threads.
Lucky you...I've been trying to get my busted bolt out for 3 weeks.......tried heat...tried welding a nut even tried drilling it....the drill will not bite the welds will not break (but the bolt will again) and the heat will not budge...I needa find a plasma cutter and blow the damn thing out.....never was good at this stuff.....
Khadma......antisieze only works great if you can get the bolt out...
I knew this was a broken bolt thread from the begining, I know the antiseize has to be on the bolt in the first place. I do not know if the ORIGINAL POSTER knows that there is a prentative measure he can take to avoid this problem on the starter or any other steel bolt driven into unlike metals.
I wish I knew this many years ago too.
