engine light and shaking at cold start up. then goes away.

Guys lately my 2001 PSD ( ts chip, stock exhaust, good oil level, clean fuel filter) upon startup will fire right up as normal but then the engine light comes on and the truck will run rough. This may or may not appear for a few minutes ( up to 10 minutes) but then seams to disappear when warm. I changed the CPS and no difference was found but with 92000 miles I thought it couldnt hurt. I was told to check the under valve cover wiring, check the EBV and the ICM ( I think thats correct) is this going down the correct road. The reason I write this is that the starting when cold or cooler weather is the only thing I can see as a pattern and I posted earlier when I didnt see any realtionship to any pattern. But now this pattern is spot on, so this weekend I want to try to figure it out but want to be looking in the right direction. I have seen guzzle's site and will do the EBV check if you guys think that correct for my application, anything else you guys can think of???

Also check Glow Plug relay, and look into your fuel bowl and make sure the fuel heater wire is in good condition. Might also want to have a look at the ICP (unplug the three wire connector, drivers side head valley side, and look into the connection, if you see oil present it is probably bad.)

should not see any, if it is leaking it is not holding pressure. plus, oil and electrical connections do not play well together. it has a weather pak seal on the outside of it so een if you have a ccv leak and it is blowing oily crap all over your engine none should be inside the connector.

I had the same issue. Turned out to be 2 injectors, I replaced all eight and have been good to go since. Mine had about 305k miles though.

Hey guys did a nrew fuel filter tonight ,drained the fuel bowl besides so sedimet all looked good. Check my ICP it too was fine no oil present, I did pull it from the head and oil was present under the sensor which I believe is correct but no oil inside the wire connector so I think that is good. I didnt do the EBV tube yet but answer me this I have two alternators will this job be more difficult to do with the lower alternator ?? It looks as if the alternator blocks the tube where its attached on manifold, is that correct?. Thanks.

ALSO I am getting some blue smoke at start up which when I bought the truck (62000 miles) it never did that ( it has seamed to get worse lately). I thought possibly the glow plugs but after it starts the blue smoke goes away and if at all warm it doesnt do it, but if cold you cant start it in the garage its to smokey.

I have to call bull. If the SES light came on, there ought to be some kinda soft code in there. What did you scan it with?

I agree With Tenn, many code readers don't read powerstroke codes. . . Powerstroke codes are just too powerfull for the average reader. . . so they put a surge protector on them.

as far as the EBP tube and the second alt, IDK, youll just have to get under there and look. I only have a single so mine was in and out easily.

If you haven't tried glow plugs.... OHM them out and see, at the 9 pin connector to the VC. I dont remember the range off the top of my head, but someone will chime back for that.

On a side note, at times my engine will also "shake" while at idle, not bad, but about every 25 seconds it will almost shiver. I have run Cyl contribution, rot. velocity, and all the other test but it just does it, and no real reason. I just mark it up as a character trait of my PSD.

After checking the ICP and changing glow plug relay truck ran the same. I changed the fuel filter last night, cleaned the fuel bowl real well which had alot of small stuff in it at the bottom my truck started today and ran fine. its only been one day but it ran as it should, no shaking, no engine light so we will have to see. Im curious if something in the fuel bowl would have set off the engine light?? The filter was dirty looking I wonder if it was dirty enough to do such a thing, it shouldnt be that dirty but who knows maybe I picked up some bad fuel.Lets see what happends in the next day or so.
