I posted this thread on the other major F-150 forum site. I didn't get alot of + replies there, so I thought I would try with y'all.

I went to the local tire shop today and got a few Toyo M/T's mounted up on my stock FX4 rims. The 35" tires actually fit, but when we stuck em on the truck, 1 little issue existed.
The sidewall of the tire is 1/4" from touching the upper ball joint on the control arm. I could have sworn there were people out here on this site running 35" on stock rims. Anyone? I couldn't get a warm fuzzy, so I decided not to pick them up.
Basically, my question is, is it safe to run the 35" tires on my stock rims with such a small amount of clearance?
thanks,
Tylus
pretty much all the threads i've seen/read w/ people running 35's on stock wheel is they get rubbing on the upper a-arm. sounds kinda like what you're experiencing.
I dont think its safe to run on the stockers, purely based on the rim width, versus the recommended tire rim width. BFG and others dont put those ratings there "just for show"

Thats what the guy at Discount Tire told me. He said my 305's would be okay, but didn't recommend 325's, but he would do it if I really wanted.
If you are really set on them, look into some wheel spacers that bolt on to your stock studs and give you a new set of studs. Now I know that spacers aren't the best way to go about things, but the ones that give you new studs are a better way than just a spacer plate.
I thought the 35" were okay to be mounted on 8.5" rims...maybe I misread
I thought about spacers with new studs, but by the time you spend the money on 'em, you're already 1/2 to getting all new rims. besides, it seems that you would lose some of the strength by putting them on
I was also considering 33x12.5x18, but they basically do the same thing as the 35" tires. what are all the #'s for your 305x??x??
I'm cool with getting another size, I just want 33" or bigger in a M/T tire.
I think you are asking for trouble with that big of a tire. There is a table that I'll try to find again that gives the range of rim widths that will work for tire width. I think your at the minimum width. My buddy did something similar on a smaller scale with his little Toyota. It didn't ride or handle right. You MPG will drop a lot. I only have 285/65/17 with BFG mud terrane. I get about 11.5 MPG. I drive like an old man. I hardly ever even get up to 65 on the highway. I'm not a lead foot. I agree with the extenders, don't like em. Hold off and get a nice set of wheel and tires. Nice wheel make a big difference.
Oh and just as an aside, when I moved up to the 285s on this truck, the mileage took a hit. I was averaging 15/17... I get 14-15 in all driving conditions now.
I have a 2.5" leveling kit and i will be attempting 35x1250 18s but this doesn't sound fun =(... I'm guessing new wheels are in order, might as well go with 17"!
It certainly sounds like the diameter 32" vs 33" vs 35" is not the issue.
The issue is the width which is the first # in 305x70x18 etc. The 305 or 325, etc refers to your width. You may be ok if you stick with something about 285 or about 11-11.5" wide rather than going to 12"-13" wide.
If you choose to go wider and want to get a different rim/wheel.........you may want to consider a 16" or 17" wheel (not sure if 16" will fit over brake components, etc.) You will have more tire options in 16" and 17" and a lower price per tire.
16" rim will not fit the 04+ F-150. the 17" rim prices would be nice
a 12" wide tire works just fine...the 12.5" is the deal killer though.
so after searching the net and talking to the tire shop, I've come up with 2 sizes and tires for the stock rims. my 18" rims really make it hard to find anything
305x70x18 BFG M/T
305x65x18 BFG A/T
both are good tires, but they are only 32.5" and 33" tall and 12" wide...so I'm just going to have to buy new rims. then I'll get the 35x12.5x18 or 35x13.5x18 I truly want. those BFG M/T look pretty cool
