I haven't as yet gone to buy a better manual but my 84 Ford F150 4x4 With 300I6 has what appears to be three catalytics in a row and a muffler, the one in front of the muffle appears to be an add on, wazzzup? anyone got a clue? I have a courier that I redone the exhaust on and it only has a cat I never got around to putting a muffler on as it wasn't that loud, I did make a restictor at work from stainless tube and gradually squeezed it down until it reduced the popping in the exhuast to a minimum as it did have a popping in the exhuast when tou decelerated rapidly. Can this be done with the 300 also? I know it doesn't affect the emissions as they only look for a catalytic and accessable exhaust.
Here's how my 88 is setup: I have only one CAT, one muffler and ahead of all of that I have a resonator type unit that looks kinda like a cat. I'm 75% sure it isn't. All of the above is welded in and has to be sawed off to work on it. I gutted my CAT by sawing it off at the end closest to the motor and then unbolting the muffler which is directly behind it. I then took 1/2" steel rod and drove it through the CAT to break up all of the ceramic material. Then took a 3" coupler and welded it to the fron tof the CAT, slipped it over the exhaust pipe, U bolted it on and put the muffler back on. It flows really good now, but I didn't notice any difference in power.
I guess resonators are usually at the end of the exhaust system, but the one I'm referring to is 1st. Its like a scavenger that joins the 2 separate exhaust pipes coming off the exhaust manifold. From there it exits with just one 2/3'4 or 2 1/2" pipe to the CAT. I know there's several variations on the different models.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Sep-02 AT 03:13 PM (EST)]my truck (93 f-150) has the EFI maifolds which are 2 seperate manifolds going into either a resignator or a "pre-cat" (i've been told by an exhaust speicalist its a resignator) and then to a cat with 3" pipe(soon to be removed, )then exiting with 2.25" pipe and then to a restricitive muffler. if urs is an 84 then there should only be 1 cat.
If your 84 is like my buddys 86 (my 85 currently has no exhaust) then those really are 3 cats (though each is tuned for a separate emission) and can/should be remove post haste and swapped over to a regular generic 2.25" or 2.5" cat and the rest made up with straight pipe. Less back pressure (by far! especially since yours is most likely clogged anyway) is a good thing.
I'm quite sure any these trucks don't have resonators, they go on the end of the exhaust i'm pretty sure.

3 cats on the early-mid 80's 300 i-6s :-staun dam...well the exhaust guy told me it was a resignator....i seriously think its like a pre-cat or sumthing...it looks like a cat...i dunno....all i know is id get rid of them ASAP or at least gut them if u need the emissions.
Gutting them will still make you fail the emissions......

I had my cat off the other week and gutted it. So the pre-cat gizmo does have the Catalytic stuff in it? In that case its next on the list! No emissions to pass where I live.

Thanks, the CAT stuff in case you didn't understand is the material in it that makes it heat up and burn the sulpher dioxide or whatever. In older CATS it was platinum beads, the newer ones use some sort of ceramic material. I'll have to check, but I think my o2 sensor is inbetween the CATS, gutting the 1st one may mess it up.
I know what a cat is/does, but you misunderstood what i said so lets just nevermind what i said .

Don't gut the pre-cat..it will mess up the o2 sensor readings and cause the truck to run poopy. You can get or even get rid of the cat after the o2 sensor as long as emmissions in your state allow it.
