Stock Engine Temp Sending Unit

Engine is a 400. Is there a way to test the sending unit to see if its functioning properly without removing it? A little background. The original engine for the truck was swapped out for a better one. I reused the original temp sending unit and put thread tape on it when I reinstalled it. Does the sending unit need to be grounded?

With power on, remove the wire from the sender and ground it to a good ground, the gauge should go to full scale right.

If that works, then the sender is probably defective. It is probably possible to put so much teflon tape on it that it wouldn't ground, but you can check that with an ohmmeter by checking for continuity between a real ground and the body of the sender.

Your reading will vary depending on the pressure as well. Get a reading with the motor off, and one with it on.

Ok I will try this when I get home tonight and report back with what I find. If the sender body needs good contact with the block then Im sure I have too much teflon tape on there. Im pretty sure the gauge and everything was working before I swapped the engine but Im not sure since I bought the truck with the bad engine and never ran it much.

also With a jumper wire attached to the body of the SU while the connector is plugged in ..touch the other end to ground while someone observes the gauge.

This will confirm the condition of the internal workings of the SU

DOOH, good point. It did not occur to me to suggest providing a proper ground to allow the SU the opportunity to function correctly.

Take the teflon tape off.. it will work fine then... the sending unit is pipe thread (tapered) it does not need teflon tape to seal. The tape inhibits a good ground.

Heres what I got so far. I grounded the SU wire and the gauge pegged as expected. I pulled the SU and there wasnt much tape on the threads that were in the block but I cleaned it up real good any way. Still nothing. I then pulled another SU off of a parts truck thats been sitting for a really long time and installed that one....still nothing. I think Im gonna pull another SU off of another motor and see what happens.

After 4 friggin sending units I finally found one that works. And it came from a 351W! I shoulda just bought a new one. I did learn however how to check to see if the SU is bad with an ohm meter.

I sure hope I got the right one. Well any way it works and Ive got an after market gauge to see what the actual degrees are. And I put the after market gauge probe in the water pump which was the only place I could find fo it.
