My reverse/back-up lights are not working on an '80 4x4 I recently purchased. I traced back the wire from the back-up lights (wire is black with pink stripe), and it ended with a small grey plug wrapped around the left side rail close to the tranny. I know this is supposed to plug into a switch on the tranny, but I've tried everything but I cannot find it. Other forum messages said it was located by the shift linkage, drivers side, but there's nothing!
I don't know the tranny "type", but it's a 3 spd auto mated to the 351M, As an aside, the black/pink wire was paired with another purple wire, if this helps. Any help would be great!
just replaced my neutral safety switch on my 86 4x4 with c6.switch worked but no rev lights.(sw 1828 ) from ford.if doing yourself make sure to put a pin in small hole on side of switch-turn inner piece till u feel pin set itself in hole(give u neutral)-otherwise truck may not start
Look at the levers where they come out of the tranny. Behind the levers, against the tranny housing, is where the switch mounts. If you do not see a switch, then on either side of where the lever comes out, there should be threaded holes. This is where the switch mounts. If you get the one with 4 wires, 2 are for the neutral safety, and the other two are for the reverse lights.
The switch is a flat plastic piece, with a large hollow shaft in in the middle. You have to take the kickdown lever off the shifter shaft, and then the hollow shaft of the switch slips up onto the tranny lever shaft.
If you have an aftermarket cable shifter, you probably will not be able to use the stock switch.
