Cuts Out While Driving

2002 F250 7.3 PSD

RPM surged then drops to 0, no power. The first time it happened (yesterday) the engine quit and I had to pull over. Restarted and went on my way with no problems. Happened again this morning, lost power for a few seconds, but engine caught and went on my way.

I've viewed other posts, could this be the CPS?

Sounds like a CPS to me. Here's everything you need to know to fix it:

By no means am I a mechanic, but this looks simple enough, especially with the link Texas Outlaw offered. Will attempt this weekend, assuming the local dealer has the part in stock.

Thanks

Dave

It's super easy, Dave. Takes longer to round up the tools than to do the job. If you need any other advice just holler back.

local ford dealer = 29.00 +Tax
NAPA = 21.00 +Tax

Any difference in parts besides 8 bucks and a 5 mile longer drive?

I would think that the NAPA part will do just fine.

If the engine actually quits or misses it would be a CPS. Loss of rpm but keeps running could be a throttle position sensor problem.

Wanted to update in case there's somebody out there with this problem, with skills like me.

As I stated before, I am not a mechanic. On a scale of 5 I’m maybe a 2. But, with the link to the walkthrough with pictures this was an easy fix. Thanks Scott.

Left the house to pick up the part at 9:30 and by 11:30 I was test-driving my repair. Hardest part was prying out the old CPS (If you don’t count the normal #2 rated mechanic problems. But that’s a story I’ll tell you over a beer.)

I’ve driven it about 40 miles with no signs yet of the problem that started this adventure, so at least I know that I didn’t screw anything up.

Thanks to all for their response and input. Great site!!! I have found several posts of other issues I want to attend to. With this sites help I can at least assess whether I’ll attempt on my own or seek out another pair of hands (and another brain).

Thanks Y'all

Don't forget the 10mm wrench and or socket. A CPS without tools is like a microbrewery beer without a bottle opener! Or a smoke without a light or a 1 ton diesel without anything to pull or....
