Feels weak below 2k rpms

Hey all, Ive got a 6.0 PSD and a 6 speed tranny. Ive noticed that the truck doesnt really seem to make much power until around 1800-2000 rpm.

I mean I can ease out on the clutch in first, and then floor it, and it just seems really sluggish. But, once she gets to around 1800-2000 its like a kick in the pants, and pulls real hard all the way to top end (3gs or so). When i take off from a red light I have to pretty much floor it to keep up with traffic. There also doesnt seem to be much difference between floored and half throttle.

I recently had the truck in for service and they wound up replacing the turbo due to lag and low boost. The tech said it was coked up.

Ive also noticed that of course the power comes on when it builds boost, but it doesnt build 15 or 20 PSI till around 1800-2000.

Keep in mind this is my first PSD, so this could all be normal. Do these PSD have a weak lower RPM range?

Also, where do you guys normally shift your manual transmissions? I try to shift at around 1800 or 2000 (which is when the trucks makes power )

Ive only got about 500 miles left on the 36k mile warranty (no deductible) after that i have the 100k mile Powerstroke warranty. Should I take it in while there is no deductible?

Boo_Daddy,

This is normal, see post #9 in this thread from earlier today.

You can install an SCT XcalIII with custom tunes from Matt at Spartan diesel to help with the power lag.

WOW! Good info blackhat! That should be a sticky! LOL. I cant believe i overlooked that thread today.

Im glad to hear that this is normal. This is my first diesel, I came from a 01 Tacoma that had the 3.4 liter and supercharger. That little truck made most of its power at low RPM, so this is a pretty big change.

The SuperDuty pulls my 5000 boat like a dream compared to the 'yota. It sounds like I should prolly wind the truck out to around 2400 when i am towing to keep the RPMs within a good range.

What about regular driving? does shifting at 1800-2000 seem to low to shift? should i wind it out to around 2400 even unloaded?

Boo_Daddy,

Cruising at 1800-2000 is good for mileage, but i would definitely shift at a higher RPM to get more performance out of the truck when in city traffic etc. The Automatic shifts at a higher RPM and if you push it hard will shift above 3k. Redline is 4100 IIRC

Usually tooling around town, i shift at 2200-2300. That way I split the gears around the 2000 rpm peak torque (after each shift it winds up around 1700-1800 rpm). Pulling my trailer with my 78 F150 on 38s behind me I usually shift around 2600-2700 and use low to start off (helps save the clutch). Racing a ricer I shift at 3200-3600 rpm

Don't forget these truck are made to work all the time. If you are not pulling or working it hard for a while, make sure you open it up to keep her clean. This will help coking issues in the turbo as well.

Enjoy and if you want to get rid of that turbo lag and show those ricers that you can not only drive over them but smoke thenm in the quarter, give Matt a call. Best call I have made in a long time

I dont get to work my truck all the time, so I usually give her a good run once a day. Theres a nice intersection i turn onto that leads into a straight that I usually floor it all the way thru gears. I try to do that once a day I dont ever burn the tires though (BFG all terrains are $$)... I take off normally and then hammer once i am rolling and dont let out till about 70.

you always see the peak torque listed somewhere around 2000rpm on paper. but in the real world it is at a higher rpm.

go ahead and wind it up man, you are not going to hurt anything. let it rev and make the power it was designed to !!
