4R100 Removal /Installation

Okay, i am about to remove my wifes blown 4R100 in her X and replace with a new Ford Reman with a 3 yr/75,000 mile warranty!! Could not justify the added expense for the BTS or the NADP. NADP actually said stock for stock transmission that their stock tranny was really no better than the Ford reman. Anyway are there any special hints or notes onm how to remove or reinstall one of these? i have never taken out an auto tranny before. i have done many mauals, but never an auto and i was just wondering if there is anything i should beware of or look out for? any help is always appreciated. thanks!!!

well i just did mine about 3 weeks ago. If you have taken out manuals its really no diiferent. just take your time and drain the torque converter. Have fun!

Also about the torque converter. When you go to put it in the new tranny. you have to spin it a few times with inward pressure(thats into the trans)and make sure it seats onto the pump splines. You'll feel it drop in.One hand on the torque converter spining the other hand backing up the bell of the tranny.

Yes but you must make sure it is seated all the way other wise you will not be able to join the trans to engine properlly. The torque converter will pop back into place just a little bit,but that little bit will prevet you from gettin the trans to join up properlly. You are the on that will be putting the torque conver in the trans. It will most likely come along with your trans not already in it.Its no big deal you just pick it up and put it on the shaft then spin it like I explained before.

DO NOT forget to put about two qts of ATF into the converter before installing. thats always a good idea. Never run those things dry/with out any oil in them. Very small filings go everywhere. Trust me, I know from experiance.

okay, i got both driveshafts and the starter taken off tonight. i also got the dust cover removed, the torque converter drained and the torque converter unbolted from the flywheel. i got three bolts out of the bellhousing as well. i need to buy a ,onger set of extensions to get all of the top bolts out though tomorrow. that is also when i will unbolt the crossmember and take off the transmission lines. at that point it should just "slide right out." right? Ford said that their transmissions come fully assembled with fluid already in them and that all i have to do is install the inline tranny filter and bolt it right up. not disputing what you all are syaing but i'm just relaying what was told to me. Should i replace the tranny cooler considering how bad my wife smiked the tranny? i thought it may have metal and crap in the old cooler as well. the fluid that came out of the TC was black and i estimate maybe 4-6 quarts came out. i drained the pan at the plug and only got maybe a quart out. Top starter bolt was a #!@%^&!! Anyway, the old tranny was the victim of the dreaded mechanical diode. Ford says the new 4R100s are much better than the old ones, i guess thats what they are supposed to say though. They say if i service it right (every 20K or so) that it could last a lifetime. Any truth to that? Also, should i get a banks transcommander or anything? i have heard that those help a good bit. thanks for all of the help. i am sure that i will have more questions as i progress through this. has anyone ever installed one of these from the ground also? i dont have a rack so i have the vehicle up on jack stands (four 3-ton stands with floor jacks under each diff). i figuired after bolting on the transfer case to the new tranny, me and a buddy would put a floor jack under it and slide it up under the vehicle and try to mount it. am i crazy or just unlucky? again, thanks for all of the help!!

I R&R'd my trans from the floor. The biggest problem was getting the truck high enough to clear the bellhousing to roll it out from under. I also removed the transfer case first and reinstalled it after the trans was in (easier to balance). Got tranfer case mtg gskt from Ford, not available at parts house. When installing the TC (if not already), put a straight edge across the trans bellhousing. The pilot of the TC will be well below this line when the TC is fully seated in the pump flats. I flushed the coolers and lines and reused them. Sounds like you should replace your OTA cooler and flush the WTA cooler, in the radiator, and the lines. If the new trans does not come with the DTR sensor (gear position switch), check the index marks on the sensor while in neutral and put it back on the same way. This will put it in position, close enough, for it to work properly in all the gears. Any other ???s. Let us know. We're glad to help!

Good catch Ron. He should at least change the gaskets or change the pipes completely. He wants to put lots more miles on that truck.

no, i dont even have it all the way out yet. up pipes look good so far as i can see. no leaks or anything yet. now my truck actually has a leaky gasket and i ordered the new up pipes with bellows for it from international. as not to add monumental expense to this project, i will probably just skip the uppipes for now and address them when and if there is a problem. I ordered my tranny from powerstrokeshop.com so they are supposed to call today and let me know when it will be here. i may go ahead tonight and unbolt ye old transfer case and get that out of the way now.

FYI - Bob's @ SEMA right now. If you call there, ask for Ben.

How bad is this removal so far? I'm told if you have access to the right tools and helper(s), the average joe mechanic can have it removed in 2-1/2 hours.

So I figure 8 hours for me.

i would say the average joe mechanic that has done it before maybe could have it pulled in 2.5 hours. provided he has a rack and a jack. if you are a ground pounder like myself though, i would think that it would take a little longer. i have about 3 hours invested so far and do not have it out yet. I would consider myself a pretty average joe mechanic, by no means an expert, but i can hold my own. the work is not too bad, i am just making sure to mark everything really well so it all goes back together as smoothly as it can. i would guess the worst part will be the actual removal (heavy!) and reinstall (heavy!).
