I get about 12 mpg and can usually run the rear tank until the fuel guage is almost touching the red and it will hold about 14 - 15.5 gallons of fuel, depending on how long I stand there and nurse it in.
Last week I was driving along and the truck starting losing power, like it was running out of fuel, the guage read 1/4 of a tank. I switched to the front tank, it picked back up and ran fine. I didn't really give it much thought, wind was blowing, thought maybe I was imagining things.
Anyway, it did the same thing again this week, ran out at 1/4 tank. Stop and filled, the rear tank held 12.5 gal.
This happened all of the sudden, what do you guys think are some things to check?
I am not familiar with the pick-up system, I guess its possible that it broke or cracked and is sucking air? Has a leaf or something in it that when the fuel is getting low it sucks up to the pick-up?
The fuel pick up tube is probably cracked. It happens. You can ignore it and just swap over to the other tank when it sputters or remove the tank and repair it.
yep what Jim said. here is a pic of a fuel pick up but the black bell shaped thing probably broke off
ummm, I sill probably want to fix it sometime, when I can find time. Do I have to buy that whole unit in the picture? or Just attach some new line where the "black bell shaped thing" was?
well I really don't know if they are availible seperately. I would call ford and ask them. It might be best to go tot he parts department then you can see the pics and point out the part to them.
Well I just called Ford and they didn't find a part number for the foot only. only the whole sending unit. I would bet that depending on where the foot broke off you could fix it with some 3/8 brake line and some hose clamps. you can shove a piece of brake thru that entire foot with just a little drill work on the end. if has a shoulder there that once its removed the hose will go right thru it. It blocks of the mixing valve (who cares!) but thats the only issue.
