i have a 4spd in my 86 f150 right now and im wondering if there is any way i can swap it out for either a 5 or a 6 speed. is this possible or am i just wasting my time?
I'd say don't waste your time on the tranny and buy a good box instead of wasting it on the wooden flatbed that you were going to build..........
is there any way to get this jack off banned??????? ive just been putting my ideas out there and you have done nothing but undermine all of them...... dont hide behind your keyboard.

Well put. I guess my question would be, what do you need a 5 or 6 speed tranny for? If you want better high way cruising then simply putting a larger tire or re-gearing it would be easier. I myself have been trying to figure out what it would take to slip a 5 speed in my pickup. But nobody seems to respond to me with an actuall answer on what it takes.
Is yours a 2wd? because that would make a swap to me MUCH easier.

Banned? For what? Voicing my opinion?
This is the internet, and if you post stuff like this be ready for people to respond.
In your post about the wooden flatbed, you said that you didn't have $200 to spend on a decent replacement bed for your truck. Now you post a question about putting in a 5-6 speed tranny? What do you think something like that is going to cost?
And if you would have taken the time to use the "SEARCH" button, you would have seen that this has already been covered. Many times........

I have the same question (about the trans swap). I posted it over in the trans/drivetrain forum but got no meaninful responses.
I can't speak for hondadriver4life, but my reason for wanting a different transmission is drivability. I have an 82 F100 with the 300L6 and a T18 trans. The ratio jumps between 2nd and 3rd and 4th are way too big for the 300. When your engine is so strangled by poor intake and exhaust that it can only spin 3000 RPM, the T18 is a bear to drive. The ZF 5-speed would be no improvement over the T18 in that respect, because 1st is still a granny gear, and 5th is overdrive - you still have the huge jumps in ratio between 2,3,&4. However, the ZF 6-speed is an interesting possibility. It has a granny 1st, and 6th is overdrive. That leaves 2,3,4,&5 with much better ratio spacing. What I have no clue about is whether the 6-speed will bolt up to anything other than the power stroke diesel. The ZF 6-speed would be a really sweet trans for the 300 IF it will bolt up. I suspect that it won't, however. Anyone have any input on this?
Yea that makes sense with my T18. I also got a built V8 so I dont feel quite so bad with going from 3rd to 4th. But its still quite big. I tried the drivetrain forum also.
No answers as far as a 5 speed swap. Most of them said build a AOD tranny to hold up to my engine. But thats quite a bit of money let alone the swap.
Luckily I have come across a pickup that had the engine taken out. It had a 302 in it. Lucky for my it has the ZF5 and a 208 Tcase. So I think I might take advantage of my situation. Ill think Ill go shoot a tape and take some measurments. Maybe Ill be the one to find out how this swap will go.

Don't know if the 6 speed will fit, and it sounds like you would not be satisfied with any of the other trannies, if they would fit or not. What would make you happy is a gear vendors overdrive unit. We know it will fit, will give you 8 speeds(it will split shift for you) with your 4 speed you have now, the only rub is the money, but a newer 6 speed would probably cost you the same amount.

i am actually looking to lower the rpm range on the motor and my thought process is to put in more gears to give the engine more choice of ranges. and yeah it is a 2wd
I'm assuming that the 4 spd you have is the T-18 granny...which in that case I don't blame you for wanting another gear and to "drop" the low range first......a 5 spd shouldn't be that difficult......you'll need all the moving parts that enable you to shift....or if you want to go fancy grab a 5 spd and reservoir from a 90's model truck and convert it over to hydraulic clutch.....your biggest obstacle will be installation of new pedal assemblies and your inexperience(I'm assuming)....I know how you feel...you can search any subject to your heart's content but not every question is answered from worn out threads...and it's not all straightforward either......you're not the only one that doesn't enjoy getting dicked around for an answer...Hope this helps....

well thaqt was actually quiet helpful but like you stated i dont really hav any knowledge when it comes to this truck so no; i dont know what kind of trans is in the truck but how would i be able to find out?
