i have a 01 4x4 auto trans 4.0. it just started westerday when i was stopping at a light and my break pedal felf weird. it pulsated like the abs kicked on. it happens during normal breaking on dry roads. i can also hear a clicking noise sometimes coming from the rear i think. im going to take the rear drums off and check them. if they are good i dont know what else it could be other than a problem with the abs.
Just to be clear - are you saying the brake pedal pulsed when you were stopped at the light, i.e. not moving? Or do they pulse when your are braking?
If you think the ABS is kicking is when it shouldn't disable the ABS and see what the brakes feel like then. If they still pulse, it's almost certainly something mechanical...

I like this test idea, simple fast & good towards helping you isolate the type of problem.
For this test, you can temporarily depower the ABS system, by pulling it's underhood electrical distribution box, power fuse, or power relay. Your owners manual & distribution box cover, will show you which fuse & relay power your 01's ABS system.
De-powering the ABS system, just reverts the brakes to normal power boost, without the ABS pump motor in the loop.
Hmm, I'm not sure what to tell you, I had the same type of problem on my '90 Taurus but it didn't have ABS. I ended up redoing most of the brake system except for rotors.
It is usually caused by moisture in the rear drums and then they lock up. Then the abs kicks on to unlock them. Usually an irratic abs signal will set off an abs light.
Also be sure to check for leaky wheel cylinders. My 88 did this. No one drove it for 3 years, and the wheel cylinders started to leak. It would get the rear brakes wet, then they would lock up as I drove, and the ABS would then kick on. It was not fun, but they work great now!
brake problem fixed. i removed both drums and found that on the left side the wheel cylinder was leaking and on one of the brake shoes the pad came off. i went to the parts store and got new brake shoes, new wheel cylinder ( of course they didnt have the $4.00 wheel cylinder repair kit ) and a hardware kit. installed all parts and all is well. thanks to all for the help.
